[Michlib-l] 2014 Community Reads Announced the The Neighborhood Library Association

The Neighborhood Library Association (NLA) is pleased to announce the selection of their fifth annual Community Reads book, We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, by New York Times bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler.  In this curious, wonderfully intelligent novel, Fowler brings to life a most unusual American middle-class family, ordinary in every way but one.  Each of the five libraries that comprise the NLA will host book discussions and book-related events.  The 2014 Community Reads program begins today and runs through November 18, culminating in an author visit on November 18 at Novi Public Library. 
 
Participating libraries are: Lyon Township Public Library, Northville District Library, Novi Public Library, Salem-South Lyon District Library and Wixom Public Library. 

Fowler’s book is a tale of loving but fallible people whose well-intentioned actions lead to heartbreaking consequences. The madcap plot and fresh diction add humor to a story about experimental psychology, human development, and animal rights.  It is worth the trouble to avoid spoilers, and let the author introduce the troubled Cooke family before she springs the jaw-dropping surprise at the heart of the story.

Programs include: Humane Animal Education with the Detroit Zoological Society: Dangers of Exotic Animals as Pets on Saturday, September 20 at 2 pm at Salem-South Lyon District Library;  Our Closest Relatives: Understanding Primate Behavior and Ecology  on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30 pm at Lyon Township Public Library; Journaling to Reduce Stress on Wednesday, October 29  at 6:30 pm at Wixom Public Library; Healing Vets & Saving Pets on Thursday, October 30 at 7 pm at Northville District Library;  Leader Dogs: Helpers, Guides, and Friends on Tuesday, November 11 at 7 pm at Novi Public Library; and Meet the Author: Karen Joy Fowler on Tuesday, November 18 at 7 pm at Novi Public Library. Registration is required for the author visit and may be required for the other events.  Contact each library for details.
