PRIVILEGED AND CONFIDENTIAL/NOT SUBJECT TO DISCLOSURE UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT
Hi, Sheila. Most libraries that I have worked with on this have adopted a policy that prohibits petitions inside the building but allows persons to circulate petitions outside as long as they are a reasonable distance (usually 10 feet or at most 15 feet) from the doorway. First Amendment concerns apply to a much greater extent outside the building and thus petitioning generally must be allowed subject to reasonable restrictions. I can give you more info if you like.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Petition Policy
Good afternoon,
I'm looking for examples of petition policies for public libraries. I'm finding a lot of examples from libraries out of state that basically say they do not allow petitions. I'm curious if there are libraries around that allow petitions to be left in the library? If so, what types of petitions are allowed?
Thanks so much.
Sheila
