This year marks the 140th anniversary of the State History Conference, and
HSM is proud to celebrate this milestone in conjunction with the 130th
anniversary of Ferris State University.

 

The State History Awards will also be presented during the conference. Each
year, the Historical Society of Michigan presents a State History Award to
those individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions
to the appreciation and understanding of Michigan history.

The Historical Society of Michigan is our state's oldest cultural
organization, founded in 1828 by territorial governor Lewis Cass and
explorer Henry Schoolcraft. A nongovernmental nonprofit, the Society focuses
on publications, conferences, education, awards and recognition programming,
and support for local history organizations to preserve and promote
Michigan's rich history.

Here's a preview of what you'll learn about at this year's conference.

 

David Pilgrim of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia will speak at the
State History Awards Banquet on "Using Objects of Intolerance to Teach
Tolerance and Promote Social Justice."

 

The Saturday Opening Keynote will discuss "Russell Kirk: The Wizard of
Mecosta County," presented by Gleaves Whitney of Grand Valley State
University.

 

"The Business of Being Amish" will be the topic of the Saturday Luncheon
Keynote with speaker Denise M. Reiling of Eastern Michigan University.

 

Author and storyteller Larry B. Massie will entertain attendees with stories
about "The Color of Michigan's Past" during the Celebration Banquet.
