The Historical Society of Michigan seeks a qualified individual to serve as
Membership and Events Manager.
The Membership and Events Manager is responsible for attracting, retaining,
and engaging members and creating short- and long-term goals for membership
growth. The successful candidate, working with the Executive Director, will
also oversee operations and logistics for major Society conferences and
events, including the State History Conference, Michigan in Perspective: The
Local History Conference, the U.P. History Conference, and other events. In
addition, this position will work with existing staff to research and
implement improved processes and solutions, as well as develop strategies
for greater presence in communities statewide.
Duties and Responsibilities
Membership
* Provide overall leadership to our membership program
* In coordination with the Executive Director and Director of
Development, create a
long-range plan for membership growth
* Review and augment membership renewal procedures, software, and new
member acquisition efforts
* Oversee, implement, and manage donor recognition and gift
acknowledgement programs and communications in coordination with the
Director of Development
* Maintain professional correspondence with members via email, phone,
and personal contacts
* Identify and assist Director of Development in stewarding major gift
prospects from membership pool
* Manage the Membership Coordinator, who works with the Society's
membership database, including processing and fulfillment procedures, data
management, member account inquiries, and other duties
Events
* In conjunction with the Executive Director, create conference action
plans for budgets, timelines, vendors, and contracts
* Coordinate with the Director of Development on fundraising goals for
our major conferences and events; cultivate relationships with sponsors and
donors to solicit and facilitate sponsorships and sponsor benefits for each
event
* Cultivate, motivate, and mobilize strong volunteer committees to
plan content for each event to effectively solicit sponsors, donors,
speakers, and event participants
* Provide leadership on effective conference software, and oversee the
Conference Coordinator on all event information, including
reservation/ticket sales, auction items, donations, and attendee information
* Manage the Conference Coordinator, who provides support services to
our conferences and will report to the Membership and Events Manager
* Analyze and bring forward recommendations based on current databases
being used for event tracking/payment for effectiveness, efficiency of use,
cost efficiency, and recommended improvements
* Coordinate with the Communications Manager to develop event design
and materials, implement mailings, marketing, outreach, and public relations
for all events
* Manage onsite setup, production, and takedown for each event
Other
* Assist at various HSM events
* Provide editorial support to HSM staff by proofreading all mailings
and promotional materials
* Other duties as assigned
Reports to: Executive Director of Historical Society of Michigan
Salary: $30-32,000 plus vacation, health and retirement benefits.
Minimum Qualifications
. Minimum of 3-5 years professional experience in membership
development and events management
. Bachelor's degree in a related field
. Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
. Experience with or interest in working in a nonprofit environment
that is
mission-driven
. Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and managerial skills
. High level of problem solving and organizational skills
. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member
. Interest in or experience working with nonprofit organizations
. Interest in Michigan history is a plus
