This is a long shot, but maybe it's the Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason.   It is set in Burma during the time of British rule and on Amazon, it has a red cover!

A patron came into our Library seeking a book he read in the summer of 2008. It was in paperback in 2008, and had a red cover. This is what he remembers about the book:

It was either a novel with five interconnected stories, or a collection of 5 related short storiesA main character was closely involved in the rubber industry, possibly a rubber plantation, in Thailand - possibly during British colonial rule, possibly referred to primarily as "Siam" instead of "Thailand"It was a love storyHe thinks the author was femaleIt could have been YA, but he's not positive
It is not any of these titles:
