For those interested in evening of intriguing and attractive books, Michigan State University Libraries is hosting book artist Karen Hanmer on Monday, February 16, 2015 * 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Main Library North Conference Room, W449

Karen Hanmer's work weaves together themes of history, technology, personal and cultural memory, and the landscape of the American Midwest. Her studio practice is unusually varied, including design binding, small editions of artists' books, larger editions of inexpensive multiples, and installation. Hanmer will present an overview of her work followed an opportunity to examine a few of her books held in MSU Libraries' Special Collections.

Karen Hanmer's artist-made books are physical manifestations of personal essays intertwining history, culture, politics, science and technology. She utilizes both traditional and contemporary book structures, and the work is often playful in content or format. Hanmer exhibits internationally, and her work is included in collections ranging from The Getty Museum and the Library of Congress to Michigan State University and Graceland. She is a leader in the book arts community, having served on the editorial board of The Bonefolder, as Exhibitions Chair for the Guild of Book Workers, and as frequent exhibition curator and juror. She offers workshops and private instruction focusing on a solid foundation in basic binding skills.
