[Michlib-l] Thoughts on little free libraries?

Jessica -
My library in West Virginia used the Little Free Library movement as a community building and outreach tool.  Members of the community built little libraries and donated them to the library.  We displayed them in an art contest and then installed them throughout the county as outreach for the library.  It was a wonderful experience, and they are being used with great enthusiasm!  I think the positive press and raised profile for the library in the community will have a far-reaching effect on public support and use of the public library, and there has been no drop in circulation as a result, so far.

 Jessica,
We have been big supporters of the Little Libraries in our community in Grand Traverse County. We sponsored the construction of the first one and also donated books. Since then we have worked with Boy Scout groups to deploy several others and various other community organizations and private individuals have erected their own. These Little Libraries have not had any major effect on our donation levels or circulation and the publicity has been excellent. We have a variety of resources on our website if you want to learn more:

Hi again,

Minor correction to my previous post to the list serv: the parks and recreation department, not the city council, wants the library advisory board's opinion on the matter of Little Free Libraries.

Thank you to everyone who has replied thus far!  The majority opinion seems to be that these are fabulous to have in the community.

Good morning,

My library's municipality is considering allowing a Little Free Library in a local park during good weather.  The city council wants my library advisory board to weigh in on the matter.  Do any of you have experiences with a Little Free Library in your area?  Are these good things, just by getting more people to read?  Or is there a noticeable drop in library circulation or book donations?  Does your library get involved, by advertising its services at the Little Free Library?

I appreciate all input on this.  Thank you.
