If the model number is the same, go for it. If it's a different model balance cost and any added value a local or not so local vendor would add.
In my experience, laser bar code readers just work - or just need reprograming and then they just work for years and years.
My preferred vendor is RACO Industries. http://www.racoindustries.com/

Subject: [Michlib-l] Barcode Scanner question
I need opinions, and I know that there is never a shortage of those on the listserv!
We need to replace our barcode scanners - one is broken, the other one is old and tired. I've looked at Demco; their prices range from $160 - $700! I've also been looking at Amazon where prices are much more reasonable (less than $100).
Does anyone know whether I can use the less expensive scanners? Have you used them at your library, and if so, what was your experience?
You can reply to me off list at galesburglibrary at hotmail.com<mailto:galesburglibrary at hotmail.com>.
Thanks!
Helena
