Grand Rapids Public Library, a nationally recognized and innovative
leader in library service, seeks a forward-thinking, creative leader for
the position of Librarian I. Located in the heart of Grand Rapids,
Michigan's second largest city and the urban center of a growing region
of more than 1 million people, the Grand Rapids Public Library is known
for its outstanding collections, unique programs, community
partnerships, and excellent service. Grand Rapids is full of creative
energy—dazzling art and culture, amazing dining and nightlife, inspiring
natural beauty and exhilarating community spirit. It is a remarkable
place to live and work.
This is a full time professional Librarian position. This position is
part of the Collection Services team and involves collection development
(both print and digital) for adult and youth collections for all GRPL
locations.
A strong knowledge of collection development procedures, as well as
collection maintenance, assessment, promotion, outreach, and
contemporary practices are important to this position. Understanding the
vital role that access to strong collections plays in serving our
patrons is essential to this position.
Knowledge of ordering procedures, ebooks, budgets, grant writing,
readers advisory, and the ability to maintain positive relationships
with vendors is preferred.
The person in this position will also provide assistance on public
service desks and be a member of programming committees and outreach
teams. This person must be committed to providing excellent customer
service to both patrons and coworkers. The work will be performed under
the direction of a supervisor and involves coordinating or supervising
work of other library employees.
The applicant must have an ALA accredited MLIS degree. Certification as
a professional librarian from the State Library of Michigan, or the
ability to immediately qualify for the certification, is required.
A commitment to excellent internal and external customer service and the
ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds are essential
qualifications.
The person must be able to sit or stand for extended periods in the
performance of the job. Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds without
assistance is required.
Apply in writing and provide an updated resume detailing relevant
experience and qualifications to John Baar in the Human Resources Office
by 5:00pm on the closing date.
