POSITION TITLE:  Communications Assistant                                               APPLICATION PERIOD:
LOCATION:  Service Center                                                                            Beginning:       March 11, 2015
RATE:  $ 15.93/hr. - 24 hrs/wk                                                                     Closing Date:   April 1, 2015

DUTIES:  Prepares and tracks media releases and monthly correspondences for distribution to area media organizations, governmental units sponsors and other organizations. Creates and distributes promotional materials as necessary. Assists in establishing and maintaining media and government relations. Coordinates media interviews and meetings as needed. Assists in creating and editing various print, web/blog, eNewsletter and social media content to promote KDL programs and services. Collaborates with graphic designer and programming staff to ensure accuracy and effectiveness of printed and electronic program publicity. Prepares and distributes regular updates and internal communications to Library staff. Develops and tracks special promotions and library initiatives. Tracks media coverage (print, broadcast and online) of KDL; generates monthly media coverage report. Maintains awareness of current public relations trends through periodicals, conferences, professional organizations, or any other relevant medium. Communicates pertinent information to KDL for possible consideration. Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: taking photos of KDL events and staff, ordering promotional items and participating in committees and task forces.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  This job requires a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or related field. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including editing and proofreading. Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work with a variety of individuals and establish effective working relationships with Library staff and patrons, local government officials, civic and community group leaders. Computer skills to effectively utilize MS Word, PowerPoint, desktop publishing, WordPress, Constant Contact and other applications. Understanding of best practices in utilizing a variety of social media venues to promote and encourage customer engagement. Ability to work under general administrative direction with considerable latitude, and exercise independent judgment, subject to policies formulated by the Library Board. Ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines. Ability to travel between work locations and related places of business as needed. Basic photography skills required. Physical skills necessary to lift/carry materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Visual acuity necessary to accurately read computer screen displays. Hearing ability to answer telephone and patron inquiries.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Previous public relations/journalism experience preferred. Video production experience preferred. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.


HOURS AND LOCATION: KDL provides library services to our local communities seven days per week. All positions will require some evening and     weekend hours, including Sundays. While this position is currently assigned at the above location, KDL reserves the right to require all employees to be available for assignments at any KDL location.
