POSITION TITLE: Director of Branch Services and Operations (non-union) APPLICATION PERIOD:
LOCATION: Service Center Beginning: March 16, 2015
STARTING SALARY: $80,000/yr. Closing Date: March 30, 2015
DUTIES: Responsible for administration of all public service operations within the Library Branches and is acting liaison between the Library Branches and Administration. Collaborates with organizational stakeholders to ensure the efficient and effective coordination of operational resources. Participates on the Library's Administrative Team consulting with other members on all phases of the Library's administrative policies, procedures, services, activities and programs. As a member of the Leadership Team, keeps technical skills current, remaining innovative and visionary with relevant knowledge and skills as an industry leader creating solutions to workplace concerns and opportunities which reflect positively on Kent District Library as both an employer-of-choice and contemporary library responsive to the service needs of its taxpayers. Assists in the preparation of the Library's Business Plan. Assists the Library Director to handle complaints or problems regarding library services or policies via telephone and/or correspondence, investigates and responds to patron queries regarding services or policies and suggestions for services. Provides overall supervision, leadership, direction and guidance to public service managers in the planning and delivery of strategic initiatives and core services related to branch operations. Ensures staff performance in public services operations meets organizational accountabilities. Leads to ensure public service staff are equipped with the tools and resources necessary to fulfill the requirements of the public services business plan. Assesses and evaluates branch performance through frequent branch visits, analysis of a variety of statistical data, patron feedback, stakeholder input, and any other relevant source of information available. Participates on KDL committees, consulting with other management staff on all phases of the Library's administrative policies and procedures, activities and programs. Provides leadership and direction to committees and task forces. Participates on professional committees at the local, state or national level. Works through a Design Think process to identify human-centered services and products to improve library responsiveness to our communities through innovation. Attends KDL Board meetings and other meetings deemed necessary by KDL. May include meetings with local Library Advisory Boards, Friends of the Library organizations, governmental units, and the Lakeland Library Cooperative. Evaluates KDL Branches regarding space configuration and facilities needs. Acts as a consultant to public services managers, governmental units and local advisory groups regarding expansions and building projects. Assesses and evaluates circulation services through regular meetings with Circulation Managers, branch visits, regular meetings of CLASS, and LLC Circulation Forum. Assesses and evaluates youth services through regular meetings with Youth Specialists and Youth Staff, branch visits, regular meetings of Information staff. Evaluates KDL Branches regarding space configuration and facilities needs. Acts as a consultant to public services managers, governmental units and local advisory groups regarding expansions and building projects. Serves as Administrator-in-Charge in Library Director's absence. Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university. Six to eight years of progressively more responsible experience in professional library work, including four or more years in an administrative or supervisory capacity. Library of Michigan Permanent Professional Certificate. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and practices of public library operations. Thorough knowledge of the policies and procedures of the Kent District Library. Demonstrated management and leadership skills. Ability to work under general administrative direction with considerable latitude, and exercise independent judgment. Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to work with a variety of individuals and establish working relationships with patrons, staff, community leaders and government officials. Analytical ability to interpret community interests/needs and develop long range plans.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Some graduate course work in management or business preferred.
HOURS AND LOCATION: KDL provides library services to our local communities seven days per week. All positions may require some evening and weekend hours, including Sundays. While this position is currently assigned to the above location, KDL reserves the right to require all employees to be available for assignments at any KDL location.
