The Ypsilanti District Library Board of Trustees seeks applications for the position of Library Director of the Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) due to the upcoming retirement of the current Director. The Library Board seeks an experienced, strategic, and creative leader who will build on the library's success as an innovative and service-oriented Class VI Michigan Library.
YDL is a district public library serving the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township, and a portion of Superior Township, Michigan. Governed by a seven-member elected Board of Trustees, YDL is a busy public library serving a population of approximately 83,000 residents. With a $3.8 million budget, the library circulated 822,000 items and hosted nearly 40,000 programs in 2014. Library staff (46 FTEs) provides high level service through a multi-branch system (an award-winning main branch of 60,000 square feet, a former Carnegie Post Office downtown branch of 11,000 square feet, a satellite township branch of 1,100 square feet, and a bookmobile). A portion of the library staff is represented by the AFSCME union. As an autonomous governmental unit, the Library receives funding from operating millages voted in perpetuity. The Library is also supported by active development efforts, grants, the Friends of YDL, and the Ypsilanti District Library Endowment Fund.
Ypsilanti is an ethnically and economically diverse community with a long history of support for the Library. A loyal patron recently referred to YDL's Whittaker Road facility as "a jewel in Ypsilanti's crown." Ypsilanti, MI is recognized for its commitment to entrepreneurship, sustainability, local history, and cultural activities. Ypsilanti is home to Eastern Michigan University.

Responsibilities:
The Library Director is responsible for the administration of all library functions within the goals, guidelines, and policies established by the Library Board of Trustees. Such functions include budget preparation and fiscal management, strategic planning, program and service development, policy formulation, personnel management including union negotiations, facilities use and maintenance, as well as fund raising and public relations activities. The Library Director is expected to provide a leadership role within the Library and the community. The Library Director serves as the official representative of YDL.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications for the position are an ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science, the ability to obtain and retain certification as a Professional Librarian Level I from the Library of Michigan, and a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible public library service with three (3) years of library administrative responsibility. Essential attributes and skills include excellent writing and communication skills, sound fiscal and budgeting skills, thorough knowledge of current trends and best practices for public library service, demonstrated strategic planning and analytical skills, understanding of library technology and applications, demonstrated leadership skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, board, other governmental bodies and community agencies, and the general public. The ideal candidate will be energetic, dedicated to excellent customer service and passionate about equal access for all.
Compensation:
The hiring salary range is $85,000 - $105,000 (placement dependent on experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits package.
