YES! It’s clear that children who have a book rich environment have much higher success in school. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that the importance of reading to children begins at birth. Sadly, there are too many homes without a single book for their baby! We can help your library make a difference in your community and turn more families into readers and library users.
Books for Babies is a national literacy program that acquaints parents of newborns with the important role they play in the development of their children. Parents are presented with a Books for Babies kit containing a board book for baby, baby’s first library card, and a variety of brochures with reading tips and early literacy information from nationally-recognized educational organizations. Kits are available in both English and Spanish.
Organizations such as Friends of the Library groups, Women’s Clubs, and Junior Leagues purchase Books for Babies packets. Groups often supplement the packets with information about local resources, including library locations and contact information as well as details about lapsit and preschool storyhours. Click here to place an order<http://www.ala.org/united/products_services/booksforbabies/kitcontents> for Books for Babies kits, or to order a sample kit and find out more about starting a Books for Babies program in your community.
