POSITION TITLE: Librarian
DEPARTMENT: Youth Services, reporting to Department Head
RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct public service: provides positive, proactive professional service to the public at the Youth Services desk; plans and conducts developmentally appropriate programs for young people (birth to middle school) and their families; demonstrates knowledge of downloadable material, emerging technologies and social media. Provides readers advisory and contributes to library website.
Indirect public service: Ability to work successfully in a program-oriented team environment; keeps statistics for reporting; uses current technologies for communication; assists with department services; participates in the selection, development and evaluation of youth print, non-print and electronic resources; prepares bibliographies, guides, displays, and assists with website and library social media.
Policy: assists in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures.
Professional development: participates in professional organizations; seeks opportunities for professional growth and development.
REQUIREMENTS: Minimum: ALA-accredited Masters in Library Science; experience working with children; a high level of energy and self -motivation to create, publicize and conduct new programs; develop and conduct outreach programs in the community; familiarity with Windows-based computers; knowledge of internet and database searching; flexible with scheduling; Able to lift, push, and/or pull at least 20 pounds; able to visually review materials and discern voice and audible tones. Desire to serve the public, and specifically children, in a positive, energetic manner. Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills to work effectively with staff, volunteers and library users in a team environment,
Desirable: Public library work experience; successful experience presenting developmentally appropriate programs for young people; experience with selection and budgeting material for children. Knowledge of children's literature.
HOURS: Part time, 20 hours weekly, including evenings and weekends.
WAGE & BENEFITS: $20.61 per hour. Pro-rated paid time off benefits, i.e., sick, personal business, vacation, holiday and emergency time. Term life and
disability income insurance. Eligible for deferred compensation program.

YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN
TYPICAL WORK WEEK'S TASKS
A typical work week for the Youth Services Librarian may include:
* respond to homework alert received via web site or fax
* assist parent and child in locating most appropriate images for report online, in picture file, and in collection
* prepare book talk to give off-site at one of several area schools
* answer patron questions about upcoming novel by a best-selling author
* prepare brochure-style bibliography of materials and web sites related to a popular subject
* update and identify new links for youth page of web site
* instruct patron in the use of downloading eBooks
* review and select new titles to order for the print collection
* weed collection according to Selection/Collection Development policy
* brainstorm programming ideas with colleagues
* explain library policies regarding holds
* instruct patron in use of online library catalog
* suggest additional titles for beginning- reader patron
* assist teacher in the gathering of resource materials for classroom unit
* help patron evaluate results from Internet search on public access computers
* conduct on-site program for 40 visiting first graders
* assist fellow on-desk staff with in-depth or hard-to-find reference questions
* consult with monitor regarding disruptive patrons
* answer telephone inquiries for materials, asking page staff to locate items
* encourage and oversee pages in absence of immediate supervisor
* assist patron with MeL request
* locate magazine article using InfoTrac Junior edition or eLibrary elementary.
* conduct lap sit Mother Goose Club program
* take visiting Scout troop on tour
* lead youth, shelving staff, and patrons in event of emergency
* visit elementary schools to promote summer reading program
* add content to youth pages on Library website
* conduct class in library computer lab for teachers or parents demonstrating online resources
* develop handouts for parents and teachers
* assist patron in selection of Special Need toys
