FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Preserving Family History

Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30-7:30 p.m.

We look around the cemetery and wonder who lies beneath the
gravestones with our surname. What happened that influenced the world
into which these people were born? What happened in their lives that
molded who and what they became, ultimately influencing what we have
become? What are their stories? Local author Laurice LaZebnik will
discuss her search to find answers in her own family tree and the
importance of discovering your own.
Join author LaZebnik's talk about her historical research, her
discovery that her great-grandmother was a bootlegger posing as a
potato farmer and learn how to preserve your own family's history.
"Minnie's Potatoes," Lazebnik's third novel, is historical fiction
based on the romantic life of her great-grandmother in Prussia, her
life as a pioneer in early Michigan's lumbering era, and her life as a
businesswoman brewing and bootlegging moonshine.
"Minnie's Potatoes has that Laura Ingalls Wilder appeal at a mature
level. This historical romance is an adult "Little House on the
Prairie," set in Michigan's lumbering era and its path through
Prohibition."
- Valerie Valentine
LaZebnik's previous titles include "The Atomic Sailor" and
"Strongheart." More information can be found at
http://lauricelazebnik.com/ This event will take place at Jackson
District Library's Carnegie Branch, 244 W. Michigan Avenue, Jackson,
MI, on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30-7:30 p.m. Intended for adults.
Please call Debby Sears at 517-788-4087 for more information on this
event.

All,

We are proud to present the newest partner destination in the Michigan
Activity Pass program. Please welcome the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship
Museum (USS Edson) http://www.ussedson.org/ to MAP. In case you
haven't been counting (I have been counting) this makes a total of 411
destinations for MAP this year.

Thank you for your support of the Michigan Activity Pass program.

Has anyone who uses Ingram as their primary vendor noticed that they
are receiving only a 10% discount on titles from major publishers?
For example, we received only a 10% discount on the heavily promoted
Rise of the rocket girls (Little, Brown). When I questioned the
discount, I was told "This book falls under 'Text, Technical,
Reference, Small Press' titles, which under their Michigan state
contract is 10%." Today, I received more books with a 10% discount
(DK Publishing, Penguin Books), so I went back through invoices
received since the beginning of 2016 and found many others (Crown,
Norton, Houghton Mifflin) that are not technical books, but rather
books marketed as basic non-fiction. My sales rep is working with me
on this, but I wanted to know if this is affecting only my library or
all Michigan
libraries.

Hello, I just wanted to share the name of a great presenter if you are
looking for an adult program. Teresa Irish presented last night on
the Journey of the Thousand Letters. After her father passed, they
found 1,000 letters that he had written home during his tour of duty
in the European theater during WWII, and Teresa wrote a book which
includes many of the letters titled A Thousand Letters Home.

Teresa kept the crowd enraptured with her tales of family life in
Saginaw, her father's war time experiences, and his pride in his
children. She supported her talk with music and photographs, and
willingly answered all questions at the conclusion of her talk.
Perhaps best of all, from a library staff point of view, Teresa was a
dream to work with-very organized, and quick to respond to emails or
calls. From comments made, our patrons thoroughly enjoyed the
presentation. Her website: www.athousandletters.com

Special Library Presentation: 101 Things that Happened on the Mackinac
Bridge

Mark your calendars forApril 13^th at 6:30 pm and enjoy /101 Things
that Happened on the Mackinac Bridge /presented by Mike Fornes through
the support of the Special Collections Department at the George N.
Fletcher Public Library will be an entertaining, informative
presentation about historic, tragic, and humorous events on the iconic
?Mighty Mack.? Since construction began in 1954, the Mackinac Bridge
has withstood gale-force winds, the pressure of crushing ice flows,
and blinding snowstorms.
Since its opening in 1957, it has been struck by lightning, and hit by
an airplane and a ship, yet still stands as perhaps the safest five
miles of I-75. Take a trip through the first six decades of the
bridge?s history and experience unusual crossings, triumph and
tragedy. Parades of vehicles and pedestrians have crossed over the
Mackinac Bridge and flotillas of ships have passed under it. Hear the
stories, see the photos and meet the people who have made this
engineering wonder a symbol of the state of Michigan.

Author Mike Fornes covered the Mackinac Bridge and the USCG Mackinaw
for
26 years for several outlets in Northern Michigan, including radio and
television stations and the Cheboygan Daily Tribune. A resident of
Mackinaw city, Fornes is frequently in demand as a guest speaker and
presenter to tour groups, cruise ship organizations and historical
societies. He is the author of the 2008 Michigan Notable Book
/Mackinac
Bridge- A 50 Year Chronicle 1957-2000, USCGC Mackinaw WAGB 83: An
Illustrated History of a Great Lakes Queen/ and Arcadia Publishing?s
/Images of America:/ /Mackinac Bridge/ and /USCG Mackinaw WLBB-30/.

I would like to second Judy?s endorsement. We had Teresa here last
fall, and it was an amazing evening. She engaged audience members of
all ages, and it was a very moving program.

Subject: [Michlib-l] Great presentation

Hello, I just wanted to share the name of a great presenter if you are
looking for an adult program. Teresa Irish presented last night on
the Journey of the Thousand Letters. After her father passed, they
found 1,000 letters that he had written home during his tour of duty
in the European theater during WWII, and Teresa wrote a book which
includes many of the letters titled A Thousand Letters Home.

Teresa kept the crowd enraptured with her tales of family life in
Saginaw, her father?s war time experiences, and his pride in his
