SUMMARY OF PURPOSE
The Technical Services Specialist is responsible for performing a variety
of technical duties to support functions of the Library. Works as part of
the team responsible for providing access to the collections of The Henry
Ford. Responsible for a variety of collections services in the Reading
Room; assisting and orienting both public and internal clientele.
Participates in special projects and collections work as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Participates in the acquisition of materials, including purchasing,
cataloging, and processing books, trade literature, periodicals,
microforms, journals, databases and videos. Tracks expenses for Library
budget.
Generates interlibrary loan requests to other libraries on behalf of
THF staff. Fulfills interlibrary loan requests from other libraries.
Perform a variety of library collection maintenance tasks, such as:
daily shelving, shelf reading, searching for missing items, shifting
collections, identification of collection material in need of preservation
or reorganization.
Greet and register all clients. Provide an overview of services and
policies. Answer reference questions about the collections and refer
questions to Reference Staff as needed.
Introduce and explain circulation procedures to clientele. Use library
system software to check books in and out to eligible clientele and
generate notices. Record registration and circulation statistics.
Using the integrated library system, the EMu content management system,
manual catalogs and finding aids, assist clientele to identify and request
collection materials.
Performs other activities as necessary.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience. Ability to engage
all levels of a diverse user community in a congenial and productive way.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Experienced with
collection management systems, library information systems, and Microsoft
Office software. Familiar with library and/or archival catalogs and finding
aids. Strong attention to detail; dependable and flexible work habits.
Ability to set and continually readjust priorities while responding
efficiently to multiple service requests.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Strong coursework in or knowledge of U.S. History. Coursework in
Information/Library Science or Archival Studies
Deep knowledge of library information systems functionality and
operation
Library cataloging experience

Lifting—frequently lifting up to 20 lbs.; occasionally up to 45 lbs.

MENTAL:
Good at problem solving and search techniques. Able to understand and
interpret complex policies and procedures for a diverse audience.
Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills. Able to retain
concentration and poise while providing service to a diverse user group.
ENVIRONMENT:
Normal interior environment with occasional to frequent exposure to high
levels of dust, mildew, and mold.
