Michigan Notable Author to Visit Bayliss Library

Bayliss Public Library is fortunate to be selected this year to host a 2016 Michigan Notable Author. Adam Schuitema, from Grand Rapids, will speak at the library on Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m. He is the author of the novel Haymaker, set in the U.P., and the short-story collection Freshwater Boys. Both were named Michigan Notable Books by the Library of Michigan. 

 

Adam earned his MFA and Ph.D. from Western Michigan University and is an Associate Professor of English at Kendall College of Art and Design. His 2016 Michigan Notable Book, Haymaker, will be the topic of his program. 

 

In a political culture infused with debates about personal liberties, the role of government, and even the definition of “freedom” itself, Haymaker tells the story of a fictional Michigan town (located in the area east of Grand Marais) that becomes the flashpoint for some of the principal ideological debates of our day. A town first settled by lumberjacks, prostitutes, and roughnecks, Haymaker’s present becomes as volatile as its past. Haymaker is a story about the failure of best intentions and the personal freedom of individuals to do good or to harm. 

 

This witty and politically charged novel will interest those looking for an entertaining fictional account of a situation that could plausibly play out in one of the many small, remote towns in this country.

For the past 25 years, the Library of Michigan has selected its annual 20 Michigan Notable Books that highlight Michigan people, places and events. The books, published the previous calendar year, are about or set in Michigan or the Great Lakes region, or are written by a Michigan author. Selections include nonfiction and fiction books that appeal to a variety of audiences and cover various topics and issues close to the hearts of Michigan residents.

There will be copies of Adam Schuitema’s book for sale and signing. The Friends of Bayliss Library will provide refreshments. A lobby display coordinated with the Chippewa County Historical Society will be on view.
