[Michlib-l] OverDrive Training Materials

I have put together my own handouts to give to staff and patrons for using OverDrive on various devices. I always save them as PDFs to re-print, but I have attached the .doc files so that you all are able to edit them to fit the OverDrive websites for your own libraries. Much of the info I have copied from help.overdrive.com, but I have made various sections more detailed and added screenshots of various buttons. The Android, iOS, Kindle Fire, and Kindle eInk ones are fairly detailed, whereas the MP3, iPod, and Windows 10 handouts I have not yet had the time to make more detailed, but are often good enough to get patrons going.

So far, I have only put on one staff training session. I passed out the iOS handout and had staff follow along with me while I went through the instructions on an iPad connected to our projector. That way they could see the “app view,” which seems to be how most patrons access OverDrive, verses a computer. If you have an Android or Apple device to show staff, that would probably be most helpful. The only thing I went into detail about with staff that was not on the handout was the OverDrive account. I mentioned that once you open the app and hit the “menu” button in the top left-hand corner, you can click “Account” to see if the patron is already logged into an account. The patron must “authorize” their device to download ebooks. There are several ways to authorize the device; you may make an OverDrive account, authenticate via Facebook, or authenticate via library card number. Some patrons may have also authorized via an “Adobe ID,” as this was the only way to do so years ago. I have found the process with the least issues is creating an OverDrive account. The patron should then write down the email address they provided and the password they created when they signed up for an account. They can then sign in with this same login info on other devices to be able to download the same library item to multiple devices, and keep their spot in their books. If a patron is having issues downloading multiple copies to multiple devices, and they are not sure how they authenticated their device, I often have them create (or try to sign into an existing) OverDrive account, and then login to that account on each device in the “Account” area of the OverDrive app. I showed staff how to create an OverDrive account since this seems to be the most common question at the desk for existing users.

Feel free to email me with any questions!
