FYI -

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is a division of the American Library Association. ALSC’s core purpose is creating a better future for children through libraries. ALSC advances that purpose through the core values of: collaboration, excellence, inclusiveness, innovation, integrity and respect, leadership and responsiveness. This booklist was created to share the message of creating unity, acting with kindness toward others, and promoting peace.

In an effort to share this list as quickly as possible, ALSC has chosen to keep the initial formatting simple. Later versions of the booklist will be customizable to encourage libraries to include their own contact information prior to printing.

ALSC is committed to creating a better future for children through libraries and encourages parents and caregivers to speak with their local librarians for additional books and other helpful resources.

Dear ALSC Board,
Just a quick message to let you know we published a new booklist today titled, “Unity. Kindness. Peace.” to help members and parents find books to help find positive ways to have conversations with children asking difficult questions about the election and also post-election incidents (http://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2016/11/unity-kindness-peace-new-booklist-alsc). The list is currently in a very a simple format, a trade-off for timeliness, but the list will be designed into a nicely formatted downloadable in the coming days.

Just yesterday, a video surfaced of a group of middle school children taunting Latino students. http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/oakland-county/2016/11/10/royal-oak-students-chant-build-wall-cafeteria/93581592/ and there other documented divisive accounts.

As a reminder, as a 501c3 organization we are completely prohibited from engaging, directly or indirectly, in any political campaign for or against a candidate for local, state or federal office. However, as an organization, we can make a statement about the important work that our members do in support of ALL children and families, especially when they need a safe place. Now more than ever, we need to come together, roll up our sleeves, dig-in and advocate, advocate, and advocate some more about the amazing library service we provide in order to create a better future for all children. This will always happen here at the national level with ALSC, but in the coming days we must strengthen and build our network to become even more powerful Everyday Advocates working at local and state levels.

I would like to thank the Angela Hubbard for working overtime to get the list and press release out before the end of this week, the Quicklists co-chairs Stephanie Bange and Rachel Fryd for turning around a list of titles overnight, ALA Public Awareness Office who made this a priority, and Laura Schulte-Cooper for her contributions.

Angela is consulting with the Public Awareness committee to have them introduce this as a blog post as soon as possible. We would appreciate your help in spreading the word to colleagues about the availability of the list. We hope it can be a useful resource for members, parents and caregivers.

Best,
Aimee
