Youth Services Consultant
South Carolina State Library

Job Description:
The Youth Services Consultant takes a leadership role to ensure South Carolina library staff are well supported in the provision of children’s and teen services to meet the needs of children, teens and families. The State Library offers an outstanding professional development environment for consultant staff, and plenty of encouragement for a creative, innovative approach to the work.
· Serve as the Agency’s project lead for early childhood literacy initiatives, statewide teen activities, the summer reading program, and other projects.
· Engage in field work to assess conditions in public libraries and build supportive relationships with library staff and management, to improve library environments for youth services.
· Collaborate with other Library Development staff to create and implement learning opportunities for librarians, including 21st Century skills development.
· Act as a liaison between school and public libraries for the coordination of services and for furthering collaborative projects and efficiencies.
· Participate in identified children’s and youth services initiatives and forums at the state and national level.
· Research and recommend for purchase tools and resources for service improvement and innovation statewide.
· Advocate at all opportunities for improved services and resources for youth.
· Advise State Library administrators on needed services and resources for youth, actively work to support agency goals, and participate fully as a Library Development Team member.

Salary:
Hiring Range: $39,960 - $50,000
Minimum Requirement and Additional Requirements:
Master’s degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association and experience in professional public and/or school library positions with responsibilities directly related to children’s and teen services. Knowledge of public library principles and practices; broad general educational background. Knowledge of typical library issues and problems, especially as related to children and teen audiences. Knowledge of programs and resources currently available to address those concerns. Ability to speak confidently in front of a group.
Additional Comments:
The State Library actively promotes professional development and learning opportunities for staff. Frequent day travel required; occasional overnight travel expected/encouraged. Candidates should be passionate about library services to children, teens and families, and be strong advocates for literacy. Candidates must evidence strong interest in and openness to innovation in children’s/teen services. A confident, patient, and encouraging approach is needed to work effectively in all kinds of library situations, including rural and underserved communities as well as well-supported libraries. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, including social media, to ensure information that benefits children, teens, and their families reaches those audiences. This position is key in developing a strong network of children’s services providers throughout the state.
