[Michlib-l] Borrowing Privileges and Large Fine Management

At the Kalamazoo Public Library patrons are unable to check out if they owe more than $10.00 in fines and/or fees.

We bill for replacement costs at 45 days overdue. If that brings the bill to $45.00 or higher (either for fines, bills or a combination of both), the patron is referred to collections.

On the other hand, we do not restrict computer access for patrons regardless of amount owed.

Thank you,

Steve Maesen

Hi Scott,
At the Canton Public Library we take away borrowing privileges if a patron owes $20 or more in fines. Patron accounts exceeding $35 resulting from billed materials (a portion can include late fees) overdue more than 45 days will be turned over to a collection agency.
If the patron’s account has reached $40.00 in late fees (Patron will not go to collections).

***Please excuse listserv cross postings***

What is your dollar threshold before revoking borrowing privileges? (Ours is currently $50 per patron) How do you deal with excessively large fines? (I couldn’t access the archives for previous discussions on this topic)
