Acclaimed author, ballerina Misty Copeland to serve as 2018 National Library Week honorary chair
Bestselling author and American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland will lend her support to advocate for our nation’s libraries as honorary chair of National Library Week, April 8 – 14, 2018. Like librarians and library workers, Copeland’s efforts to lead social change through her writing and teaching fuel the transformation of lives through cultural understanding, education and lifelong learning.
“Libraries Transform: Libraries Lead” is the theme for this year’s 60th anniversary celebration of National Library Week, reminding the public that libraries of all types serve as community compasses that lead users to endless opportunities for community engagement, enrichment and development.

Follow 2018 ALA Youth Media Award results live
Librarians and library staff are transforming lives by connecting youth with materials that educate, inspire and foster lifelong learning. The American Library Association (ALA) will reveal the next classics in children’s and young adult literature during its Youth Media Awards at 8 a.m. MT, Feb. 12, 20l8, from Denver, Colorado.

ALA announces winners of the 2017 I Love My Librarian Award
Ten librarians were honored with the prestigious 2017 I Love My Librarian Award for their outstanding public service contributions. Selected from more than 1,100 nominations submitted by library users nationwide, including educators and members of the public, the winning librarians are being recognized for their leadership in transforming lives and communities through education and lifelong learning. The 1,125 nominations detail how librarians working in public, school, college, community college or university libraries have gone above and beyond to improve community members’ lives. In the United States there are 190,000 librarians working in libraries of all types, and only 100 librarians have been selected for this distinguished honor since the award’s inception in 2008.

2018 Morris Award finalists announced
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), selected five books as finalists for the 2018 William C. Morris Award, which honors the year’s best books written for young adults by a previously unpublished author. YALSA will name the 2018 award winner at the Youth Media Awards at 8 a.m. on Feb. 12 in Denver during the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting.

The Opioid Epidemic and Libraries: An American Libraries Live Webcast
The opioid epidemic has sunk its teeth into communities all over the United States, and many libraries are finding themselves caught right in the middle. This crisis creates a variety of issues for librarians—we find ourselves faced with security questions, questions about treatment, questions about community resources and even medical questions. It can be tough to know how to address these issues and where to begin.
On Dec. 11 at 1 pm EST, there will be a discussion on this issue with experts who can speak to the unique concerns that come with our obligation to serve our communities in this time of crisis. They will provide you with insights and best practices but will also be there to answer your questions and listen to your concerns.

New class of 2018 Emerging Leaders announced
The American Library Association (ALA) has selected 50 people to participate in its 2018 class of Emerging Leaders.  The program is designed to enable library staff and information workers to participate in project planning work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers.

‘Carnegie Coast-to-Coast Project’ hits the streets to celebrate Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence 2018 Shortlist
Twenty public libraries and five independent book stores across the country have been selected to participate in the new Carnegie Coast-to-Coast Project, which was created to celebrate and raise awareness of the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction shortlist, while also engaging communities nationwide with these six, moving titles.

ALSC seeks member content editor for Everyday Advocacy Initiative
The Association for Library Service to Children(ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), seeks a member content editor for its Everyday Advocacy (EA) initiative. The mission of Everyday Advocacy is to educate youth services librarians on the importance of advocacy and to provide them with tools to assist in articulating their own value within the library profession and community. Applications for this position are due Dec. 31, 2017.
