YALSA Updates

  *   2018 Symposium (in Salt Lake City) Program & Paper Proposals are open through February 1, 2018.  Travel Stipends also available through YALSA.  Details can be found on the YALSA Symposium<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/yasymposium> site.
  *   The updated Teen Services Competencies for Library Staff<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/guidelines/yacompetencies> are out and free webinars<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/onlinelearning/webinar/free_competencies_webinars> are open for registration, but space is limited.
CSLP Updates for Summer Reading

  *   CSLP's 2018 Annual Meeting will be April 9-12th in Denver.  In 2019 it moves to a Fall timeslot; with the move from a Spring to a Fall meeting being incorporated into CSLP's long term planning. The revised timeline should help CSLP better leverage the ideas and excitement generated at the Annual Meeting, and will provide committees a shot of inspiration when they need it most!

Ready to Read Michigan
I Got the Rhythm author Connie Schofield-Morrison and illustrator Frank Morrison have set dates and I'm in the process of finalizing locations!  Those who applied will receive an update message from me and tour dates will go up on our website at www.michigan.gov/readytoread<http://www.michigan.gov/readytoread>. Printing of posters & bookmarks are just getting under way, so look for your kit to arrive by late January or early February at the public libraries. This is not Michigan Reads, which ended in Spring of 2017, but rather a book program for Ready to Read Michigan, the Library of Michigan's early literacy initiative for public libraries.   Library of Michigan plans to expand Ready to Read Michigan to cover professional development, family engagement, resources, etc. that public libraries can use in their communitities.  Be sure to tune-in to the webinar (top of this email) on Jaunary 17th for further details.

  *   Accompanying the Young Reader: Helping to Choose Appropriate Books<http://learn.webjunction.org/course/search.php?search=Accompanying+the+Young+Reader>
This course is designed for teachers, librarians, and parents who are helping beginning readers choose books to read. As professionals we can fine tune this process before it begins, eliminate much of the frustration, and offer the learner appropriate choices that will get them into actually READING books while they still want to, and not after they're too tired to even care anymore! It is based on the Reading Recovery Teacher training in which teachers learn how an appropriate book choice for each daily lesson encourages successful reading. Reading Recovery is a program for early intervention for 1st graders who are at-risk in the area of literacy.
