LIBRARIAN II Cataloger
Technical Services/Interloan
Hours: 40/week
Salary: 22.15/hr
Reports to: Technical Services Coordinator

Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Technical Services Coordinator, exercises professional library skills while providing original and copy cataloging based on current standards, assign call numbers and resolve cataloging problems. Stay current in best practices and up-to-date cataloging policies and uses that knowledge to provide advice and training within the department. Perform professional work in the areas of cataloging, collection analysis, interlibrary loan, or other specific fields as needed. Monitors department workflow in the absence of Technical Services Coordinator.

Job Duties

*         Create original MARC records, copy catalog, and edit and load bibliographic records to the Integrated Library System and OCLC for print, non-print, and digital items. Identify and correct incomplete/incorrect records and upgrades according to AACR2 or RDA cataloging rules

*         Assign DCC call numbers to print and non-print library materials. Add classification and call number schemes to new formats as necessary to accommodate new collections

*         Interpret and apply Library of Congress subject headings, the LC Classifications system, AACR2, RDA, and OCLC manuals in cataloging and classifying library materials

*         Provide direction and assistance to InterLibrary Loan staff as it relates to the state union catalog MeLCat and OCLC WorldCat/OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary Loan Services

*         Provide instructional aids and provide instruction for staff on search techniques in ILS and OPAC

*         Consult with colleagues on improving and updating cataloging processes. Develop and update manual describing local cataloging decisions, procedures, and systems

*         Assist supervisor in the management of the overall integrity of the bibliographic database

*         Select materials in assigned areas of the collection: participate in professional meetings and collection management

*         Participate in professional activities, track cataloging trends, work occasional evening and weekend hours

Minimum Qualifications

*         Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university

*         Minimum of two years recent experience as a professional cataloger. Prefer experience using RDA, or AARC2. Evidence of recent coursework in cataloging and two years of experience as a professional librarian may substitute.

*         Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging tools and standards including, but not limited to AACR2, RDA, MARC21, Library of Congress Subject Headings, DDC Classification, OCLC bibliographic formats and standards and LC name and subject authorities. Familiarity with adapting bibliographic records for electronic content preferred. Experience with MarcEdit preferred.

*         Ability to effectively classify library materials, create accurate and thorough MARC descriptions of print and non-book material and digital content, and assist with creative solutions to more complex Technical Services issues.

*         Experience in the selection of library materials and knowledge of selection trends and issues.

*         Working knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft software, online resources, personal electronic devices, and automated library systems, preferably SirsiDynix Symphony. Ability to use printers, copiers, and any other equipment commonly used in an office environment.

*         Ability to work with minimal supervision, recognize and set priorities to organize and coordinate own tasks, and work collaboratively in a team environment.

*         Experience in effective communication, both written and orally, with co-workers and public.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, sit, bend, twist, stoop, reach and grasp, walk, push, pull or lift materials or equipment weighing 15 pounds or more and manually manipulate computer, keyboard, mouse,  scanner etc.
