[Michlib-l] Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps Now Online

Good Morning, 

An update to the below. A couple of libraries that currently have subscriptions to the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps through ProQuest asked me if there were any differences between the ProQuest product and the LC product. I asked ProQuest the below question: 

" Can you tell me the difference if any, between the Sanborn product that is offered through ProQuest and the LC announcement below." 





The Senior Product Manager at ProQuest replied with the following: 





" It’s very early to give a full assessment, but this is what we can say at this time:" 



    1. The LC product contains only public domain maps. The ProQuest products contains both in-copyright and OOC maps. 
    2. The LC product contains maps “from the late 1880s through the early 1960s.” The ProQuest collection covers 1867 to 1970. 
    3. The LC product is a three-year project to upload the scanned maps. Expected completion date is sometime in 2020. 
    4. LC probably does not have all of the original maps and updates in their possession, i.e., only what has been collected by LC over the years and submitted to them by other institutions/individuals. 
    5. The LC version is not geo-referenced. It appears that all the LC maps will be in color, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. 
    6. We haven’t had a chance to compare the metadata between the products. There are probably differences. The comparison will be done by mid-July after the ALA Conference. 





I hope that the above answer will prove beneficial when it comes to your library making a decision regarding the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps product. I will send a follow up after the referenced mid-July date.

The digitization and online placement of the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps at the Library of Congress is an ongoing project. Michigan maps pre-1900 are now available, per the below Library of Congress announcement. The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps are a great source of historical data to genealogists, researchers, etc. For that reason you may wish to consider making them available to your patrons, if you have not already done so.
