JOB SUMMARY:
THE THOMAS TOWNSHIP LIBRARY IS SEEKING A FULL-TIME YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN. THIS EMPLOYEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTING ACTIVITIES, SERVICES AND PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN TO ADULTS. PERFORMS COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT TASKS FOR YOUTH RESOURCES, INCLUDING THE CATALOGING OF MATERIALS. PROVIDES ASSISTANCE IN THE SUPERVISION AND TRAINING OF THE SUPPORT STAFF. IN THE ABSENCE OF THE DIRECTOR, THIS PERSON IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DAILY OPERATIONS OF THE LIBRARY.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
INSTRUCT AND ADVISE PATRONS IN USING THE ON-LINE CATALOG DATABASES, REFERENCE MATERIAL PROCEDURES AND LOCATING MATERIALS.
PROVIDE REFERENCE AND READERS’ ADVISORY SERVICES TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
ASSIST WITH CIRCULATION INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, OPENING AND CLOSING TASKS, PROCESSING OVERDUE NOTICES, FEES AND FINE MANAGEMENT AND SHELVING.
ASSIST WITH DAILY INTERLIBRARY LOAN DUTIES.
INTERPRET AND APPLY POLICIES TO OPERATIONS.
EVALUATE, SELECT, ACQUIRE AND DISCARD YOUTH MATERIALS TO MAINTAIN COLLECTION RELEVANCY.
CATALOG YOUTH MATERIALS.
PLAN, PREPARE, PROMOTE AND SET UP MEETING ROOM FOR STORY TIMES, SUMMER READING PROGRAMS, CRAFT ACTIVITIES, AND SPECIAL EVENTS.
CONDUCTS WEEKLY STORY TIMES FOR TODDLERS 24 – 36 MONTHS OLD AND WEEKLY STORY TIMES FOR CHILDREN 3 – 5 YEARS OLD.
CONDUCTS OUTREACH TO AREA SCHOOLS.
OVERSEES THE CHILDREN’S READING ROOM FOR ORDERLINESS.
PLAN AND ASSEMBLE DISPLAYS.
GIVE TOURS AND INSTRUCT ORGANIZATIONS IN THE USE OF THE LIBRARY.
CONDUCT THE MONTHLY ADULT BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP.
ATTEND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS AS REQUIRED.
ATTEND MONTHLY LIBRARY BOARD MEETINGS.
SORT AND SET UP YOUTH MATERIALS FOR THE ANNUAL USED BOOK SALE.
THESE ARE INTENDED ONLY AS ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF WORK PERFORMED. THE OMISSION OF SPECIFIC DUTIES DOES NOT EXCLUDE THEM FROM THE POSITION.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
BACHELORS DEGREE IN A RELATED FIELD, MLS DEGREE PREFERRED
LIBRARY OF MICHIGAN CERTIFICATION OR WILLINGNESS TO OBTAIN CERTIFICATION
1 YEAR EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A LIBRARY SETTING
DOCUMENTED EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CHILDREN AGES 1-18
STRONG COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC SERVICE AND LITERACY
AVAILABLE TO WORK REGULARLY SCHEDULED DAYS, EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS
MUST BE ABLE TO STAND FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME
ABLE TO REACH MATERIALS ON 90 INCH HIGH SHELVING AND FLOOR LEVEL SHELVING
CAPABLE OF LIFTING A MAXIMUM OF 30 POUNDS
FRIENDLY, OUTGOING AND ENERGETIC PERSONALITY

ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY, IN WRITING AND ORALLY
ABILITY TO PRODUCE WRITTEN NEWS RELEASES TO PROMOTE PROGRAMMING & SERVICES
ABILITY TO WORK COOPERATIVELY WITH PATRONS OF VARYING AGES AND LIBRARY STAFF
ABILITY TO MEET DEADLINES
SKILL IN OPERATING OFFICE EQUIPMENT, COMPUTER EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE, ESPECIALLY MICROSOFT OFFICE
SKILL IN NAVIGATING THE INTERNET AND USING EMAIL
SKILL IN CREATING CONTENT USING FACEBOOK
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
SALARY WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE THOMAS TOWNSHIP LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND WILL BE BASED ON EDUCATION AND PRIOR EXPERIENCE.
