NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
ALA appoints Jessica Hughes ASCLA/RUSA executive director
The American Library Association (ALA) has appointed Jessica Hughes executive director of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) and the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), divisions of ALA. She will start Oct. 9.
She currently serves as chief operating officer for the Florida Hospice & Palliative Care Association. She had been the association's director of development (2010), as well as its director of strategic initiatives (2011). Before joining the Florida association, she was director of development for Community Christian School.

Longlist for 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction announced

Ken Varnum Appointed New ITAL Editor
Ken Varnum, Senior Program Manager for Discovery, Delivery, and Library Analytics at the University of Michigan Library, has been appointed as the new editor of Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL), the Library and Information Technology Association's refereed, open access journal. His term will run through June 30, 2020.

ALA, Center for News Literacy announce Media Literacy @ Your Library cohort
Five public libraries have been selected to participate in Media Literacy @ Your Library, a pilot program that will train library workers to help their adult patrons become better news consumers, The American Library Association (ALA) and the Center for News Literacy @ Stony Brook University announced.

Public libraries highlight cyber security awareness in October
Earlier this month the credit reporting agency Equifax disclosed that it had suffered a cyber-attack that endangered the personal information of 143 million U.S. users. Even before the Equifax hack, 64 percent of Americans had been personally affected by a major data breach or data theft incident, according to a 2016 study by the Pew Research Center.
As the need for cyber security awareness grows, public libraries are stepping up efforts to provide critical digital literacy training and information.
