Fading Photos: How to Identify, Scan, Restore, and Archive Historical
Photographs

This workshop will assist small museums, historical societies, and
interested collectors in identifying and preserving their historic
photographs. The presenter will review basic conservation techniques,
storage recommendations, digital scanning for access, and how to approach
cataloging issues. There will also be plenty of time for participants to ask
questions and have hands-on experiences.

Please Note: This workshop will take place at the Kent District Library -
Caledonia Township Branch, 6260 92nd St. SE, Caledonia, MI 49316. Remote
access will NOT be available.

October 25 - 1-4 p.m.

Special Off-Site Workshop in Dundee

by Alexandra Orchard, Wayne State University

Designed for small organizations that struggle with how to preserve and
organize archival materials in their collections, this workshop will discuss
proper storage and handling of collections, basic arrangement techniques,
and affordable solutions for supplies and enclosures.

Preparing for the Worst: When Disaster Strikes

Everyone likes to plan for success, but we need to plan for disasters as
well. Fires, floods, storms, thefts, injuries, violence - all of these can
strike at any time and often when least expected. Museums and history
organizations have special challenges because they care for irreplaceable
objects of unique cultural value. Despite that fact, staff members often
simply hope for the best and have no plans for the worst. This workshop
focuses on drafting a disaster plan that history institutions can use to
implement an effective response in the event that disaster strikes.

Please Note: This workshop will take place at the Meijer Education Center at
the Historical Society of Michigan, 5815 Executive Dr., Lansing, MI, 48911.
Remote access will be available.

New for 2017! Participants can now "attend" remotely, if they prefer. See
our website for full details. (Remote access is not available for off-site
workshops.)

Workshops are held from 9 a.m. to noon (unless noted) at the Meijer
Education Center at the Historical Society of Michigan, 5815 Executive Dr.,
Lansing, Michigan.

If you are a personal member of HSM or represent an organization that itself
is a member of the Society, registration is $39.

Registration for non-members is $79 and includes a one-year HSM Individual
Level 1 membership.
