I worked in one of the last NYPL branches to have a live-in custodian. He
and his wife had 10 children, ranging in age from fully grown adults to
babies in arms. Imagine my surprise when one of my first mornings I was
sitting at the reference desk and five people came tromping down the stairs
and out the front door just after the library opened.
When I turned to a colleague to ask what that was about. she said "oh yeah,
they live here!"
