All-Ages Archives: Introducing Nontraditional Researchers to Primary Source
Research

November 7 - 1-4 p.m.

Special Off-Site Workshop in Houghton

by Lindsay Hiltunen, University Archives and Copper Country Historical
Collections, Michigan Technological University

This workshop will discuss collaboration with community partners in order to
plan, develop, implement, and assess creative outreach and primary source
research instruction to K-12 students and community groups. The session will
utilize examples to show the power of teamwork and good planning and will
showcase successes and address challenges that come up in the planning
process.

Copper Country Historical Collections, Michigan Technological University,

Taming the Chaos and Clutter: Collections Management for Small Museums

November 8 - 1-4 p.m.

Special Off-Site Workshop in Marquette

Many small museums and historical societies struggle with basic curatorial
issues related to their artifact, textile, archival, and other collections.
Collections management on a limited budget poses many challenges. This
workshop will address a wide variety of storage, preservation, cataloging,
and legal issues and will be led by a professional curator with decades of
experiences in museum work.

Center, Northern Michigan University/Gries Hall, 1401 Presque Isle Ave.,

Exhibits 101: Upgrades on Tight Budgets

Special Off-Site Workshop in Sault Ste. Marie

Are your exhibits tired, but there's no money to fix them? This workshop
will share suggestions to update or create new exhibits with limited funds.
The speaker will share approaches to planning and tips on writing and
designing to create engaging exhibit materials.

Taking Oral Histories One Step Further

November 10

Completing the interviews for an oral history project is a major
accomplishment, but it is not the final step by any means. Attendees of this
workshop will understand the significance of properly cataloging and storing
oral histories so that they can be accessible later for additional
historians. Organizations embarking on an oral history project, as well as
those with boxes of old audio and video tapes, will want to attend this
informative program.

Michigan in the Meijer Education Center, 5815 Executive Dr., Lansing, MI

Participants can now "attend" remotely, if they prefer. See our website for
full details. (Remote access is not available for off-site workshops.)

Workshops are held from 9 a.m. to noon (unless noted) at the Meijer
Education Center at the Historical Society of Michigan, 5815 Executive Dr.,
Lansing, Michigan.

If you are a personal member of HSM or represent an organization that itself
is a member of the Society, registration is $39.

Registration for non-members is $79 and includes a one-year HSM Individual
Level 1 membership.
