Whitefish Bay Public Library is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, creative, tech-savvy, service-oriented librarian to join our team as the Teen Services & Technology Librarian. As a member of the Whitefish Bay Public Library staff, working closely with both Adult Services and Youth Services librarians, you will contribute to a positive, helpful, friendly, and inviting environment for library users and maintain a level of excellent library service. We are a forward-thinking, suburban library rooted in a rich history in Milwaukee County. We are proud to be the #1 library in Milwaukee County for children's materials circulation (per capita) and #2 for adult materials circulation (per capita). We made significant strides in providing successful teen programming the last few years and are looking for someone who can build on, and expand from, that foundation.
You are a librarian with a passion for working with teens in grades 6-12 and an enthusiasm for technology. You will plan and coordinate teen programming and be responsible for teen collection development. Additionally, you will provide reference services for adults, teens and children; help patrons use our digital and physical resources; and manage our technology.

The Teen Services & Technology Librarian will work to:

1)    develop and implement teen programs for our community, build and sustain relationships with community partners relevant to teen services, and collaborate with other library staff for services to all age groups.

2)    maintain an inventory of hardware and software; plan for needed upgrades/changes and make recommendations; maintain technology at levels that provide appropriate resources and functionality to patrons; install software upgrades regularly; plan and implement staff technology training and development; troubleshoot basic computers problems and refer problems to Village or MCFLS IT service.


Compensation:

Full-time. Salary. Exempt.
Beginning salary $40,000 - $43,000 commensurate with experience

Position Title:                Teen Services & Technology Librarian

GENERAL PURPOSE

As a member of the Whitefish Bay Public Library staff, working closely with both Adult Services and Youth Services librarians as part of the Leadership Team, to contribute to a positive, helpful, friendly, and inviting environment for library users and maintain a level of excellent library service. Support the Whitefish Bay Public Library Mission, Values and Strategic Plan as set by the Library Board of Trustees and provides services that meet those standards.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



I.      Teen Librarian

a)     Leadership
i)      Develop, implement and evaluate the overall teen services program, focused on services to patrons in 6-12 grade (i.e. typically 11-18 years old).
ii)     Draw on the Strategic Plan, to develop a comprehensive plan for teen programming.
iii)    Involve teens in planning and implementing services for their age group.
iv)    Develop and maintain effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies and non-profits that target teens in order to plan and deliver programs and services that meet local teen needs and interests.
v)     Develop content for the library's teen social media accounts and web site in collaboration with Community & Adult Services Librarian.
vi)    Maintain a pleasant, inviting, safe environment for teens.
vii)   Educate and support other staff members in the provision of services for teens, as appropriate.
viii)  Train, supervise and evaluate teen summer-reading-program volunteers.
b)    Programming and Outreach
i)      Initiate, plan and conduct a variety of programs and activities for patrons in 6-12 grade, including but not limited to films and special events, reading clubs, Summer Reading program, school and community outreach.
ii)     Adopt a connected learning approach to presenting programs, classes and events for and with teens so that they educate, inform and inspire.
iii)    Leverage community experts, coaches and mentors for services and programs in order to meet teen needs and interests.
iv)    Promote programs and services through social media, press releases, flyers and other public relations channels in collaboration with Community & Adult Services Librarian.
v)     Collaborate with Adult Services and Youth Services librarians on all-ages programming.
c)     Collection Development
i)      Develop materials budget, oversee expenses, inform Director of budget status.
ii)     Select and order print and media collection materials using the collection development policy, review sources, patron/staff suggestions and online acquisitions module. Weed and shift when needed.
iii)    Develop and maintain a teen collection that contains a variety of formats that serve current needs and plan for future needs.
iv)    Develop and maintain designated areas of the adult collection.
v)     Catalog materials and send to processing. Advise and instruct processing staff about changes/additions to designated collection areas.
d)    Patron Services
i)      Reference and Reader's Advisory
(1)   Participate in reference desk shifts and interact with patrons in person, over the phone and through the library website, at both the Youth Services and Adult Services desks.
(2)   Use reference interview skills to locate, evaluate, and select appropriate resources to fulfill patron needs. Offer interlibrary loan or infopass when appropriate.
(3)   Provide reader's advisory to recommend books and use reader's advisory tools to assist patrons in finding books of interest.
(4)   Maintain confidentiality of library patron information.
ii)     Technology
(1)   Assist patrons with basic computer questions and be available by appointment for patrons for individual computer instruction.
(2)   Instruct and assist patrons on CountyCat and interpret the MCFLS shared system to them.
(3)   Instruct patrons on library subscription databases, BadgerLink, library recommended websites, and other information resources.
(4)   Create patron instructional guides for library services and maintain and update as needed.
iii)    Administration
(1)   Act as Librarian-in-Charge as needed and oversee opening/closing procedures.
(2)   Follow library and department policies and procedures and interpret to patrons as needed.
(3)   Follow and interpret MCFLS and ILL policies and procedures as applicable.
(4)   Perform other duties as assigned by the Library Director.



II.            Technology

a)     Leadership

i)      Make strategic choices about new technologies to implement at WFBPL.

ii)     Research and forecast changes and trends in the Whitefish Bay Public Library patron usage to assist in technology planning.

iii)    Continually innovate and experiment with new technology for programming ideas.

iv)    Plan and implement staff technology training and development.

v)     Seek ways to streamline library functions using technology.

b)    Maintenance

i)      Monitor general technology trends in library service, plan for needed upgrades/changes, and make recommendations.

ii)     Oversee technology used by the Whitefish Bay Public Library. Maintain technology at levels that provide appropriate resources and functionality to patrons.

iii)    Maintain an inventory of hardware and software and install software upgrades regularly.

iv)    Troubleshoot basic computers problems for Whitefish Bay Public Library staff and refer problems to Village or MCFLS IT service.



III.   Professional Leadership

a)     Maintain a commitment to continual learning to improve skills and professional knowledge through reading professional literature and attending local training sessions and other opportunities as they arise.

b)    Participate in committees and attend meetings of professional organizations, such as Milwaukee County Federated Library System and Wisconsin Library Association.

c)     Attend and participate in weekly Whitefish Bay Public Library Leadership Team meetings.



DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

I.      Education/Experience

a)     Required: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school

b)    Preferred: 1-5 years' experience in: 1) teen services; 2) technology management.



II.    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

c)     Thorough knowledge of current library principles, materials, practices in technology and teen resources.

d)    Knowledge of cataloging, classifying and reference work.

e)     Considerable knowledge of authors, books and reader interests for teens.

f)     Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

g)    Working knowledge of computer applications for library services, internet searching skills and ability to discern reliable website information.

h)     Ability to act as Librarian-in-Charge when needed.

i)      Ability to operate all items listed under Tools and Equipment.

j)      Ability to make independent judgements that have considerable impact on the Library.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Automated shared resource system (CountyCat), networked personal computer and peripherals, MS Office and other job related software, printers, copy machine, scanner, telephone, paper cutter, laminator, elevator and carts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires the employee to frequently walk, sit, stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools or controls.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Work is performed primarily in a library environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderately noisy.
