TITLE:  Library Director



SUPERVISOR:  Hastings Public Library Board of Trustees



SALARY RANGE:  Minimum $50,000, negotiable dependent on experience, plus excellent City of Hastings benefits package.



POSITION SUMMARY:  The Library Director, under the direction of the Library Board, directs and manages the operations of the library, including hiring and management of personnel; initiates development and implementation of the budget, long range plans and policies; implements board policy; oversees educational, cultural, and informational services and programs.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES



*       Prepares annual budget for the Board approval, monitors and approves expenditures as directed by the Board, monitors administration of gifts, state and federal money.

*       Supervises personnel directly or through subordinates; hires and trains employees; assigns and monitors work; evaluates personnel; disciplines employees as necessary.

*       Coordinates selection of materials for collection.

*       Works with Library Board of Trustees in establishing library policies and interpreting policies to the staff.

*       Promotes and demonstrates excellent service to the public.

*       Addresses community groups and prepare correspondence and reports on library operations.  Make library resources and services known to the community through various public relations vehicles.

*       Provides fund raising support to the Library Board of Trustees including direct solicitation, mailings and reporting.

*       Responsible for overseeing grant writing and seeking external financial support.

*       Evaluates services, programs and materials as they meet the community's needs.  Do periodic needs assessment and recommend enhancements.

*       Supervises the physical plant of the library.

*       Attends City of Hastings departmental and Council meetings.  Attends Hastings Charter and Rutland Charter township meetings, as requested.  Attends Lakeland Library Cooperative Advisory Council meetings, ILS Council meetings and any related committees.  Attends Libraries of Barry County meetings.

*       Maintains all library statistics, records and correspondence and report to appropriate governing bodies, as required.

*       Answers questions and respond to complaints.

*       Maintains knowledge and skills through professional contacts, professional development activities, and necessary certifications.

*       Performs related work as required.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES



*       Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of professional library administration.

*       Thorough knowledge of current trends and developments in the library field, including, but not limited to, access, reference, technical services and collection development.

*       Considerable knowledge of assessing community needs and interest levels.

*       Considerable knowledge of fund raising.

*       Considerable knowledge of the elements making up a library collection.

*       Ability to use computers and other office equipment.

*       Ability to plan and direct library services.

*       Ability to speak and write effectively.

*       Ability to develop library work and training programs and to supervise the work of others in diversified library activities.

*       Ability to work effectively with community leaders, public officials, and the general public.

*       Ability to work effectively with numbers to complete duties related to budgeting and maintaining financial records.

*       Ability to see and hear well.

*       Physical ability to lift at least 20 pounds.



QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS



*       Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school.

*       Four years' experience with increasing responsibility in professional library work.

*       Must have Library of Michigan Certification Level 2 status and attend Library of Michigan New Directors' Workshop and Advanced Directors' Workshop or provide proof of previous attendance.

*       Ability to see and hear well.

*       Physical ability to lift at least 20 pounds.

*       Occupies 18,000 square feet in a LEED Gold building constructed in 2007

*       Offers a wide range of print materials, local history documents, audiobooks, DVD's, eBooks and e-audios

*       Provides public computing and Wi-Fi access 24/7

*       Provides programming for all ages and collaborates with outside groups to broaden offerings

*       Movies, Memories and Milestones group has offered pre-1960 movies each Thursday for over 7 years using the Community Room and library's movie licensing!
