Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Assistant Director for Public Services, responsible for the implementation of the Library’s community engagement strategies and building collaborative relationships. Focuses externally and builds connections to the community to identify, plan and coordinate the development and delivery of innovative, responsive, high-quality programs and outreach activities for adults and general audiences that support JDL’s priorities and fulfill its strategic objectives. Provides strategic direction using data about target audiences, library usage and trends. Demonstrates a passion for engaging the community and exhibits a positive approach while working with multiple-stakeholders using a high degree of diplomacy.

Duties and Responsibilities

•         Employ skills and knowledge to proactively engage with organizations and individuals providing services with the goal being to reach current and new audiences and meet community needs. This engagement may include, but is not limited to, participating in community organizations, events and initiatives, creating and sustaining partnerships, participating on boards and/or forums, involvement in local market research efforts and planning initiatives.

•         Supports Administration and branch staff in resolving complex community engagement issues.

•         Gather and aggregate data about target audiences, Library usage, and emerging trends, using the data to improve processes and ensure services are meeting community needs, and preferences and are aligned with the Library’s strategic plan.

•         Set the foundation for and oversee the creation, delivery, and assessment of the Library’s programming for all audiences, in Library facilities and elsewhere in the community.

•         Manage and support the Centralized Programming Team and participate in other staff teams as needed. Develops and delivers District wide programming such as Storyfest, The Young Poets Contest, National Library Week programming etc. to align with Library priorities, selects and strengthens programs to be presented, identifies partners, and decides upon communication strategies.

•         Collaborate with the Marketing Department and Digital Services Specialist Librarian to promote and highlight the Library’s services and resources, with a distinct focus on potential customers, partners, and the community. Develop and manage inventory of program offerings and manage program evaluation tools.

•         Prioritize, direct, delegate, and monitor workflows and activities to ensure efficient and timely completion of assignments and goal achievement. Responsible for effective use of the Library’s resources and equipment; continually assess and improve programming processes.

•         Ensure consistent application of operational, financial, and human resource standards, processes, and policies. Budget and monitor expenditures.

•         Stay abreast of new trends, best practices and innovations in the area of library community engagement.

Qualifications

•         Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited college or university required.

•         Three years of professional leadership and/or supervisory experience required.

•         Three years of related experience working with community engagement, programming, and learning required

•         Excellent listening, communication, and related interpersonal skills.

•         In-depth knowledge and experience in connecting with large and small groups across diverse populations.

•         Ability to inspire the creation of needs-based community programing

•         Consistently models pleasant and positive behaviors; demonstrates responsive problem solving skills.

•         Strong organizational and time management skills.

•         Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

•         Strong knowledge of library policies and procedures.

•         Knowledge of public library and business computer applications with the ability to learn and adapt to new software and equipment technologies.

The basic requirements of this position include the ability to visually review materials, work a determined schedule, including day, night, and weekend hours.
