New report affirms invaluable role of our nation’s libraries
This week the American Library Association (ALA) released its 2018 State of America’s Libraries report, an annual summary of library trends released during National Library Week, April 8 – 14, that outlines statistics and issues affecting all types of libraries. The report affirms the invaluable role libraries and library workers play within their communities by leading efforts to transform lives through education and lifelong learning.

RUSA president's program features a conversation with Dr. Carla Hayden
RUSA President Chris LeBeau invites all ALA Annual Conference attendees to attend the Reference and User Services Association's (RUSA) President’s Program, “New Dawn for Libraries: A Conversation with Dr. Carla Hayden” on Saturday, June 23, 4 – 5:30 PM in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
Dr. Carla Hayden, the first woman and the first African-American Librarian of Congress, is an avid proponent of proactive public services that support discovery and enrich communities. In her new role, she seeks to make the Library’s collections and stories come alive for all Americans regardless of their proximity to the nation’s capital. Former ALA President Courtney Young will engage Dr. Hayden in a wide-ranging conversation about forging roles for library services in meeting the needs of today’s varied and diverse populations.

Sue Halpern slated as featured speaker at Andrew Carnegie Medals ceremony
Sue Halpern, who has written about  butterflies and therapy dogs, as well as solitude and neuroscience, in both her warm and witty creative nonfiction and her incisive novels, is confirmed as the featured speaker for the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction Ceremony and Reception, which will take place on June 23, 2018, at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Preservation project focuses on maintaining the cultural heritage of New Orleans
On Friday, June 22 the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) will hold its third Preservation in Action (PiA) program at Preservation Hall in New Orleans. Designed to promote an understanding of the importance of preservation while engaging with cultural heritage collections during the 2018 ALA Annual Conference & Exhibition, this program will provide attendees with a hands-on opportunity to help preserve the culture and traditions of New Orleans.

New issue of the ‘Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy’ now available online
The Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy (JIFP), a quarterly journal published by the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, provides a forum for discourse on intellectual freedom and privacy issues arising in libraries, archives, and educational institutions. The Journal is available by subscription for $50 per year.

ALSC announces 2018 Notable Children’s Recordings
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has selected its 2018 list of Notable Children’s Recordings. The list includes recordings for children 14 years of age and younger of especially commendable quality that demonstrate respect for young people’s intelligence and imagination, exhibit venturesome creativity and reflect and encourage the interests of children and young adolescents in exemplary ways.
