Highlight for the week: ALA has announced the candidates for the 2020-21 ALA presidency, including our own Lance Werner, Executive Director of the Kent District Library. Thank you, Lance!
Elections will be held next spring. To receive a ballot and to vote, you must be an ALA member in good standing as of January 31, 2019.

Jefferson, Werner seek 2020-21 ALA presidency
Julius C. Jefferson, Jr., Section Head, congressional Research Service, Library of Congress, Washington, DC, and Lance Werner, executive director, Kent District Library, Comstock Park, Michigan, are the candidates for the 2020-21 presidency of the American Library Association (ALA).

ALA files amicus brief in support of net neutrality protections
The American Library Association has argued in support of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) strong, enforceable rules to protect and preserve the open internet with an amici filing with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

National School Library of the Year Award aligned with new AASL Standards
The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has released a revised application process and rubric for its National School Library of the Year Award (NSLY) that aligns the elements of the award with the newly released AASL “National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries.” Established in 1963, the award recognizes school libraries as an unique and essential part of their learning community. NSLY, sponsored by Follett, honors school libraries exemplifying implementation of AASL's Standards.

Apply now to be a part of the Teens’ Top Ten book groups
Library staff can now apply on behalf of their teen book groups for a chance to be a part of the official Teens’ Top Ten book groups.
The Teens’ Top Ten, formerly called YA Galley, is an ongoing project in which publishers of young adult books provide advanced reading copies of their recent titles to teen book discussion groups, also known as the Teens’ Top Ten book groups, in libraries. In exchange, teen readers evaluate books for the publishers.
