GeneralDescription
This is an administrative and technical librarian position involving thesupervision of youth department.  Individualmust be committed to excellence in customer service. 

Work involves the responsibility for supervising the Youthservice staff, coordinating with other library services and developing andexecuting youth programs. Duties include selecting materials for the youthcollection, monitoring behavior of children, maintaining collection,outreachand training staff.  The work requiresthat the employee have considerable knowledge, skill, and ability in everyphase of the public library field, particularly as it relates to youthservices.

Works under the direction of the LibraryDirector.

Examples ofDuties
   
   - Directs and supervises the operations of the youth department; makes assignments to staff; trains and evaluates staff.
   - Develops and executes programs and services to meet specific needs of young people ages 0-18.
   - Provides reference service to young people and teachers and provides reader's advisory service.
   - Is responsible for the evaluation and selection of services and materials for young people.

·        Assists in promoting library use,especially programs and services of the youth department.

·        Develops and coordinates all youthoutreach programs to local nursery schools and day care   
       centers, visits elementary andsecondary schools when possible.

·        Prepares and presents libraryprograms and supervises program presentation by subordinate staff.
   
   - Monitors the conditions of the youth service area. 

·        Meets with members of the libraryand others in order to coordinate activities and exchange information.
   
   - Collaborates with and facilitates adult or combined departmental programming when appropriate.
   - Catalogs youth materials according to RDA standards.
   - Works with the Public Services Librarian and Information Services Librarian as part of the Library's management team.

 

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities

·        Knowledge of the principles andpractices of public library functions.
   
   - Knowledge of the needs and abilities of youth and the available library materials and services.

·         Ability in oral and written communications.
   
   - Ability to administer the activities of youth library service and supervise the work of others.
   - Ability to develop short and long-term development and operations plans and programs for Youth library service.

·        Ability to make decisions in anenvironment of limited resources and competing claims.
   
   - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, officials of other agencies and the general public.

·        Ability to work in an environmentsubject to continuous interruptions and background noises.

·        Ability to work under stress fromdeadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.

 

Qualifications

ALA accredited MLS minimum qualification, including course work or continuingeducation in service to youth. Progressively responsible library administrationexperience, including 2-3 years’ experience working with youth.
