The Icebreaker Mackinaw

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw was built during World War II to keep
wintertime shipping lanes open. Wartime demands for steel required ships to
sail year-round with cargos of iron ore, limestone, and coal.

The icebreaker Mackinaw was commissioned in 1944. From her home port of
Cheboygan, Michigan, she kept Great Lakes shipping lanes open until a new
Mackinaw replaced her in 2006. You can visit the original Mackinaw, now a
museum ship, in Mackinaw City.
