The Incredibles to use superpowers for Library Card Sign-up Month
The Incredibles are joining the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to encourage the public to obtain a free library card as Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-up Month this September. The Incredibles will use their superpowers to remind families, students and people of all ages that signing up for a library card is a great step toward a truly super lifestyle.
Providing free access to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) programs, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help and technology workshops, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available. Library Card Sign-up Month is a time to highlight the supportive role libraries and librarians play in transforming lives and communities through education. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to utilize libraries as a source of lifelong learning.
Later this month, the Incredibles will appear in Library Card Sign-up Month print and digital public service announcements (PSAs). The free PSAs will be available for libraries to use in print materials and online. Sample media tools such as a press release, proclamation, radio PSA scripts and tweets will also be provided. In addition, free artwork for library cards will be offered. Posters, stickers and bookmarks featuring the Incredibles are currently available for purchase through the ALA Store at alastore.ala.org/content/incredibles-set.

YALSA releases new report, Transforming Library Services for and with Teens Through Continuing Education
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of ALA, has released its new report, Transforming Library Services for and with Teens Through Continuing Education (CE).
The report is the result of a year-long national forum that took place from June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2018, and was hosted in partnership with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA) and generously funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
“At YALSA we believe it is critical that all library staff, in all types of libraries, engage in continuous learning (CE) in order to be able to effectively serve teens,” said YALSA President Sandra Hughes-Hassell. “The recommended strategies included in this report provide guidance for various stakeholder groups on how to transform CE opportunities and create a culture of continual learning thus enabling library staff to put teens first.”
