ALERT: Upper Peninsula Flood Relief
Heavy rains and storms recently produced severe weather conditions across
the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin, devastating the area's landscape
and infrastructure. The Houghton area was severely hit. Major road cave-ins,
sinkholes, and hazardous building damage and collapsing areas have led
Governor Snyder to declare a state of emergency for the area.
The Historical Society of Michigan is raising funds for the Houghton County
Historical Society in Lake Linden and other local history organizations in
the area that may have been affected to provide relief for the devastated
portions of their historical collections and property. Please consider
helping today. Any donation HSM receives will go toward the repair of
damaged property and the preservation of salvageable artifacts and
collections.

World War I's Women Overseas
Did you know that women in Michigan did more than serve on the home front
during World War I? Some of them made it overseas! They worked as telephone
operators, called "Hello Girls," and canteen hostesses, who would help
soldiers by sewing on buttons, singing songs, serving coffee, and reminding
them of home. Approximately 20,000 American women served in overseas
hospitals either during or just after the First World War.
Reserve your spot for the Color & Culture Tour!
The upcoming Michiganders on the Road adventure takes place in Maine and New
England. The areas are beautiful at any time of year, but they're absolutely
stunning during the fall color season. The sugar maples of Vermont, New
Hampshire, and Maine turn red, orange, and gold in a sea of color unlike
anywhere else in the world. In our 9-day, 8-night Color & Culture: A New
England Sampler Tour, travelers will see the countryside at its most
spectacular as they take in some of the region's premier historic sites.
This tour runs from October 6-14, 2018. The reservation deadline is August
24.
