NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION

Journalist and Author Isha Sesay to close the 2019 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle
Isha Sesay, who played an integral role in CNN U.S. and CNN International's joint coverage of major events, including the protests in Egypt, Japan’s nuclear reactor crisis, the Amanda Knox trial, the fall of Tripoli and the royal wedding in London, will close ALA's Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits, from 2 - 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, in Seattle.

Sesay was born in England and at the age of seven moved with her family to her parents' homeland of Sierra Leone. At age sixteen moved back to London to pursue her studies and ultimately matriculated to Trinity College, Cambridge, where she read English. After graduating, she joined the BBC Networks as a researcher, then moved to Sky Sports News where she hosted Good Morning Sports Fans. In 2005, she joined CNN International as an anchor and correspondent covering major breaking news stories and global events.

Baker & Taylor to sponsor 2019 ALA Youth Media Awards Webcast
The American Library Association (ALA) will reveal the next classics in children’s and young adult literature during its Youth Media Awards announcements at 8 a.m. PT, on Jan. 28, 20l9, from Seattle. Libraries, schools and book lovers from around the globe will follow the action live through ALA social media channels and the live webcast at http://ala.unikron.com.

The YMA webcast is made possible by the generous support from Baker & Taylor, a Follett Company. For more than 180 years, Baker & Taylor has served as a leading distributor of books, video and music products to libraries, institutions and retailers.
“Thank you to Baker & Taylor for assisting with ALA’s efforts to share YMA selections with mass audiences,” said ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo. “The YMA webcast continues to grow in popularity as more educators use the broadcast as a tool to support mock elections and the backdrop for class celebrations across the globe. Last year alone more than 25,000 viewers joined us live as we announced the best of the best in literature for youth. We are grateful for Baker & Taylor’s support as we continue to work to foster a love for reading and a nation of avid readers.”

ALA Announces Emerging Leader Participants for Class of 2019
The American Library Association (ALA) has selected 50 people to participate in its 2019 class of Emerging Leaders. The program is designed to enable library staff and information workers to participate in project planning work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity early in their careers.
Audrey Barbakoff and Pauline Stacchini, co-chairs of the Emerging Leaders program are excited to welcome the 2019 class. They look forward to working with this most recent cohort of talented and committed early career leaders who are eager to pursue leadership opportunities in the association. “This year's class joins a distinguished group of alumni, many of whom continue to make significant contributions to ALA.”

The Emerging Leaders program will kick off with a day-long session facilitated by Maureen Sullivan during the ALA 2019 Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. Following the kickoff session which includes orientation and training, the program will continue in an online learning and networking environment for six months. The program culminates with a poster session where the 2019 Emerging Leaders will showcase the results of their project planning work during the ALA 2019 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
