2019: A Universe of Stories!
October is right around the corner and that means the start of a new CSLP program year. The slogan for 2019 is "A Universe of Stories" and will focus on all things spacey!

Whether it is the beauty of the cosmos, the wonder of exploration, or the scientific marvel of humans in space, A Universe of Stories has something for all your patrons. This year's theme is particularly timely, as 2019 also marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing. We are working diligently with our partners at STAR Net<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.starnetlibraries.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7Cf8f4d0468d204a6acde108d6258e1295%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C636737689451584849&sdata=esl4w0ISPhPHYmKd1WqEY8CZSJ3J9filfagkGVh7fls%3D&reserved=0> to develop additional programming opportunities, often with a focus on STEM, to help you wow your community.

While programming and theme are important components to any library program, fantastic artwork and graphics also play a vital role. Great artwork adds excitement and visually raises awareness of your library and your programs in your community. CSLP strives to provide you with top tier artwork. We are very pleased to share with you the artists for the 2019 program year!

The Elizabethtown Library Rocked it this summer!
Angela Heroux, Library Director at the Elizabethtown Library, NY, sent in this programming success her library had this summer. Every Thursday between July 12th and August 9th they invited the Elizabethtown-Lewis Youth Commission students (ags 5-12) with teachers and counselors (about 60-70) to come to the library to celebrate their Champlain Region's History. They focused on the Early Settlers and the Native American Tribes who contributed so much to Early American History.

They were even generous enough to share their lesson plan: Summer Camp 2018 Lesson Plan<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpreads.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2018%2F09%2Flesson-plans-2018-library-camp.docx&data=02%7C01%7Clancasterc5%40michigan.gov%7Cf8f4d0468d204a6acde108d6258e1295%7Cd5fb7087377742ad966a892ef47225d1%7C0%7C0%7C636737689451614870&sdata=T8zbUC8%2FMdsBoutPynKG4aB9Xjj7%2Fz7EwSLdVLgvO0A%3D&reserved=0>

Steps to create a Space Ship out of a refrigerator box and a dryer box
CSLP's own Karen Day created this Space Ship for our booth at this year's ARSL conference. Here are her step by step instructions for you to create you own!

  1. First decide if this space ship will be for little people or for all ages so you can determine what size boxes you will need and where you might put your completed space ship. This could be a group or family project. We made our ship for adults at the ARSL conference.
  2. Contact your local appliance store and ask them to save you a refrigerator box and possible a dryer/oven/washer box.
  3. Our boxes had flat lids and we chose to keep those in tack to give the space ship a little more stability.
  4. Make an opening on the backside of the refrigerator box large enough to allow your patrons to go in and out.
  5. Make an oval (or two, or three) to allow patrons to put their face in for a photo op or just to see out (and you to see in)
  6. Cover your refrigerator box with butcher paper or craft paper, and mold it around your openings. We put duct tape over opens to cover the rough edges and to help hold the paper on. The inside of the box does not need to be covered since that is only for the patron to go in and play or get their picture taken.
  7. To make the top of your rocket/space ship, trim the dryer box down to an appropriate size.
  8. Beginning at the middle cut each side of the box down to the corner of the lid in to form the four peaks/points of the rocket.
  9. Cover or decorate the points any way that you feel will be attractive to your patrons.
  10. Connect the four point with duct tape to stabilize the top.
  11. Set the completed dryer box on top of the completed refrigerator box.
  12. We used stars and colored duct tape and ribbon to cover the areas that were still exposed and to help stabilize the space ship more.
  13. Have tons of fun with this project!
