If you've ever considered running for ALA President-Elect or Councilor-at-large, today, July 31, is the deadline to submit a nomination. Apply online using the Direct Nominations<https://officers.directnominations.net/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2F> site. You'll need to create an account if you've never used the site before.


ALA is also seeking volunteers<http://www.ala.org/aboutala/committees/volunteer/frm_vol> for various committees and applicants for the 2020 Class of ALA Emerging Leaders<http://www.ala.org/educationcareers/leadership/emergingleaders/>. To apply to volunteer, your ALA membership and dues must be up-to-date.


Maybe you'd like to learn more before dipping your toes in the big ALA pool? A new fellowship for mid-career/service ALA members may be exactly what you are looking for. ALA is accepting applications for the first round of awards for the Lois Ann Gregory-Wood Fellowship Program<http://www.ala.org/awardsgrants/awards/37140/apply>. You must have been an ALA member for at least two years and attended at least one ALA Annual or Midwinter meeting. The fellowship is open to all library workers, information professionals, trustees, and friends who have been employed/active for at least five years. The award is intended to encourage interest in ALA governance by providing a $2,500 award to offset attendance costs for the ALA Conferences. The fellowship honors Gregory-Wood's 50 years of service to ALA, including service to several units and the role of Council Secretariat for over 27 years.


Congratulations to Clara Nalli Bohrer, director of the West Bloomfield Township Public Library, on her appointment as the Public Library Association's (PLA) first fiscal officer.

SCOE Update


Hello Members!

The Virtual Input Sessions for the Steering Committee on Organizational Effectiveness are now available on ALA Connect! The sessions present the same material, but folks ask different questions in both, so feel free to watch one or both and fast forward to the input part. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to let us know what you like about the Preliminary Recommendations and suggestions for improvement of the recommendations. We're gathering input for the next week or so and will spend August and September refining our recommendations.

The American Library Association (ALA) denounced the new library ebook lending model announced by Macmillan Publishers. Under the new model, a library may purchase one copy upon release of a new title in ebook format, after which the publisher will impose an eight-week embargo on additional copies of that title sold to libraries. As immigration rises to the forefront of public discourse, public libraries continue to be a trusted resource for new Americans seeking to gain familiarity and skills in a new land. To help libraries better serve these populations, the American Library Association (ALA) has released a white paper exploring how U.S. public libraries can provide the services new Americans need to thrive.

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has released a new resource guide to support school librarians in nurturing inclusive learning communities. “Developing Inclusive Learners and Citizens Activity Guide” contains reflection activities and resources based on Include, one of the six Shared Foundations contained within AASL's "National School Library Standards." PLA names Clara Bohrer as first fiscal officer<http://bit.ly/2YlZfYe>
Today, the Public Library Association (PLA) officially announced the appointment of Clara Nalli Bohrer, director of the West Bloomfield Township (Michigan) Public Library, as its first fiscal officer. Through a ballot initiative approved by the members earlier this year, the position of fiscal officer was added to the PLA Board of Directors. In her capacity as immediate past-president, board member Pam Sandlian Smith selected Bohrer for the fiscal officer role. Bohrer will serve a three-year term on the PLA Board, ending in 2022. ALA releases findings from NILPPA, a national study of library public programming
<http://bit.ly/2lG8LUp>The American Library Association (ALA) has released a report outlining the findings of an intensive research study that explored the characteristics, audiences, outcomes and value of U.S. library programming, as well as the competencies required to succeed in the field.
The report, “National Impact of Library Public Programs Assessment: Phase 1: A White Paper on the Dimensions of Library Programs and the Skills and Training for Library Program Professionals,” is the result of a two-year project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). ALA’s Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT) is pleased to announce the publication of four videos to engage non-librarians in the fight to protect intellectual freedom. The brief explainer videos cover the basics of intellectual freedom, censorship, and privacy for a non-library audience with key definitions and everyday language.
The videos were created as part of the 2019 Emerging Leaders project sponsored by IFRT and showcased at the ALA Annual Conference in Washington D.C.
