Hi Michigan Team,

As we're planning for fall, please keep in mind that November is National Runaway Prevention Month and Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Though most organizations don't have their 2019 information up, much of the info from last year is still available.

November is National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM), a public awareness campaign designed to “Shine a Light” on the experiences of runaway and homeless youth that too often remain invisible. It is also an opportunity to spotlight the resources available to support youth in crisis throughout the nation. As part of the campaign, individuals, organizations and communities across the nation are encouraged to work together to prevent youth homelessness.

National Runaway Prevention Month is spearheaded each year by the National Runaway Safeline (NRS), a national nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that runaway, homeless and at-risk youth are safe and off the streets, with the support of the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB).

The goals of NRPM:

To raise awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and the issues that these young people face
To educate the public about solutions and the role they can play in ending youth homelessness
If you are interested in becoming a partner, please fill out this form. Reach out to Rachel Reynolds, Outreach & Prevention Specialist at rreynolds at 1800RUNAWAY.org with any questions.

Call 1-800-RUNAWAY if you are thinking of running from home, if you have a friend who has runaway, or if you are a runaway ready to go home.
In addition, National Runaway Safeline has other materials to use:

-A free, evidence-based, interactive, runaway prevention curriculum intended to educate young people about alternatives to running away as well as to build life skills

-Promotional materials free of charge including posters, bookmarks, brochures, and wallet cards

-A prevention specialist to lead a youth group discussion by phone

Please consider participating, sharing this information with your community, and involving your teen groups!

It is also Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. It seems to start the second Saturday in November.

Here are some resources for that:

Use this poster to promote your Awareness Week. The design includes a large block of open space where you can add information about your Week’s events.

Thanks for all your hard work supporting our youth!
