Hi -
Today at 4pm, we're hosting a free webinar on the impacts of digital
surveillance and datafication on childhood, presented by Jacksonville State
University's Wendy Stephens:
In the quest for smarter, faster, stronger learners, everyone from anxious
parents to corporatized school systems seems to be exploring
technologically-enabled instruction and data-based decision-making. But
with facial recognition and behavioral analytics reaching critical levels,
are we creating unalterable data representations of young people to their –
and our own – detriment? This webinar will explore emerging data-related
phenomena such as social cooling <https://www.socialcooling.com/>,
steganographic
approaches
<https://publications.computer.org/computer-magazine/2018/11/15/how-steganography-works/>,
and politicization of presence
<https://www.oxfordscholarship.com/view/10.1093/0198294158.001.0001/acprof-9780198294153>,
and identify key considerations for those who help young people negotiate
privacy concerns face-to-face and online.
Presented by Wendy Steadman Stephens, Assistant Professor, Jacksonville
State University
