Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month in Michigan.  Although current public health conditions caused the cancellation of this year's child abuse prevention awareness day rally at the state capitol building, child abuse prevention advocates across the state have found innovative ways to show support for this important work. Staying cooped up at home has led to creative thinking throughout the library world. Youth departments in public libraries are leading the way with live and prerecorded e-storytimes for patrons. E-resources are being shared via social media and email. Now that your library has these services situated, what next? Gather some fresh ideas about virtual services and programming BEYOND e-storytimes and rhyme videos. Attend to your patrons social-emotional needs by responding in a trauma-focused way through Lincolnwood Public Library's intentional programming and messaging. Reconnect with families while maintaining social distancing via Vernon Area Public Library's Chalk Doodles and Pen Pal with a Librarian outreach. Finally, encourage at-home literacy activities through Northbrook Public Library's impromptu Spring Reading Program and connect with school-age patrons through coding and gaming.

Liz Gibbons-Camp, Adult Services Coordinator at the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library in Ohio and an ALA Emerging Leader, is compiling a national list of performers who are willing to present virtual programming during the public health emergency and beyond. Liz asks that librarians consider reaching out to performers they've booked in the past, and asking if they would consider performing virtually during this emergency or at other times. For some children, home is not a safe place.  Take a deeper look at what some children might be experiencing in this time of crisis, how it might affect learning, how to recognize the signs of abuse, and how public libraries might best serve these children. Dr. Amelia Siders will be our presenter, she is the Director of Clinical Practice Development and Education, at the Children's Advocacy Centers of Michigan.
Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) partner with prosecutors, law enforcement, and protective services to coordinate the investigation of child maltreatment-often child sexual abuse. CACs also provide support to child survivors of abuse so that those kids can get back to being kids.

Parents and caregivers know the value of the storytime programs; librarians not only provide valuable language experiences, they model good practices! But how do we help parents understand that language experience is something they can provide for their children all-day, every day? Storyteller and Narrative Consultant, Jenifer Strauss will model a Ready-to-Use Parent Presentation that librarians can use to encourage parents to engage their children in quality language experiences during the course of a regular day with their kids.
