The American Library Association (ALA) selected “Lost Children Archive,” by Valeria Luiselli, published by Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Penguin Random House LLC, as the winner of the 2020 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and "Midnight in Chernobyl," by Adam Higginbotham, published by Simon & Schuster, as the winner of the 2020 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. The selections were announced at the Reference and User Services Association's Book and Media Awards (BMAs) sponsored by NoveList, during the ALA Midwinter Meeting & Exhibits at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The awards, established in 2012, serve as a guide to help adults select quality reading material. ‘How We Fight for Our Lives’ and ‘Cantoras’ win 2020 Stonewall Adult Awards<http://bit.ly/2tvHQ23>

Two of the 2020 Stonewall Book Awards were announced Sunday, Jan. 26 by the Rainbow Round Table (RRT) of the American Library Association (ALA), during the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Exhibits, held January 24-28 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Stonewall Book Awards are given annually to English-language works of exceptional merit relating to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender experience and include the Stonewall Book Awards – Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award (announced at the Youth Media Awards press conference on Monday, Jan. 27), the Stonewall Book Awards – Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award, and the Stonewall Book Awards – Barbara Gittings Literature Award. The awards will be presented to the winning authors at the American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago in June.

“How We Fight for Our Lives: A Memoir” by Saeed Jones and published by Simon & Schuster is the Stonewall Book Award – Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award winner for 2020.

American Association of School Librarians (AASL) President Mary Keeling will hold online office hours at 6 p.m. Central on Thursday, Feb. 6, to field questions regarding equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in school libraries. During the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Affiliate Assembly voted to adopt the term Chapters for state and regional school library associations. The change in name better reflects the relationship of AASL to state and regional school library associations and aligns with other similar entities within ALA. The Rise: A Feminist Book Project for Ages 0-18 committee (formerly known as the Amelia Bloomer Project), a subgroup of the Feminist Task Force (FTF) of the American Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT), selected its top ten books for 2020. Each year, the committee creates an annual booklist of the best feminist books for young readers, ages birth through 18, to be used by interested librarians, teachers, parents, and others who work with youth. The Over the Rainbow Book List Committee of the American Library Association's Rainbow Roundtable (RRT) gave careful consideration to 324 books this year, 152 fiction and 172 nonfiction. Choosing 32 fiction titles and 38 nonfiction titles to make up the complete 2020 Over the Rainbow Book List, the committee was thrilled by the continued expansion of queer publishing, the depth of substantial topics covered, and the number of quality books from all over the genre spectrum. The Public Library Association (PLA) has released a new online tutorial to help patrons learn the basics of using the popular online video site, YouTube. The course, Intro to Searching Videos on YouTube, covers the basics of searching for videos for entertainment, instruction, “do it yourself,” and more. This 21-minute online tutorial explores how one navigates the YouTube homepage, how to perform searches, and how to create an account.
