The Henry Ford Benson Ford Research Center is seeking applicants for the following position.

SUMMARY OF PURPOSE
The Reference Assistant provides friendly, courteous, public service and assists staff and the public in the access and use of Archives and Library resources.  Responsible for a variety of services in the Reading Room including direction and simple reference interviews, security, paging and shelving, and copying and scanning.  The position works under the supervision of the Reference Librarian.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.     Carries out all the daily activities of the Archives and Library Reading Room Circulation Desk in an effective, customer oriented, and professional manner
2.     Provides Archives and Library users with basic information about accessing the collections and conducting research using integrated library system (ILS) and collection management system (CMS), along with hardcopy finding aids and guides
3.     Monitors the Reading Room to ensure policies and procedures are being followed, to provide collection care and handling assistance, and to ensure security of materials
4.     Conducts directional and basic reference interviews both in-person and remotely
5.     Uses the Library ILS to circulate materials, and create and maintain patron records
6.     Performs daily paging and shelving of materials from archives and library storage areas
7.     Facilitates storage area key check-out and check-in
8.     Fulfills user copying and scanning orders
9.     Conducts research to answer phone and online reference questions
10.  Supports Archives and Library operations and participates in other related work as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience; ability to engage all levels of a diverse user community in a congenial and productive way; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; fluency with PC desktop computing and experience with Microsoft Office software; strong attention to detail; dependable and flexible work habits; ability to set and continually readjust priorities while responding efficiently to multiple service requests.

SPECIAL SKILLS
Coursework in Archival Studies or Information/Library Science; familiarity with library and/or archival catalogs and finding aids; prior work experience in a Special Collections library or archive; experience with collection management systems and library information systems; interest and coursework in U.S. History.

Recognize and interpret the written word, whether hand printed, written in cursive, typewritten, computer generated, or any other type of writing.  Good at problem solving and search techniques.  Able to understand and interpret complex policies and procedures for a diverse audience.  Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills.  Able to retain concentration and poise while providing service to a diverse user group.

Environment:  Interior and outdoor environment with occasional exposure to high levels of dust, mildew, and mold.
