The American Library Association (ALA) has released a statement regarding the National Archive’s efforts to alter photographs that include protest signs unflattering to our current administration. Such an act is a violation of the Library Bill of Rights which states any deletion, excision, alteration, editing, or obliteration of any part of a library resource by administrators, employees, governing authorities, parent institutions, or third party vendors when done for the purposes of censorship. OIF responds to Missouri legislation that proposes policies and procedures that threaten access to information<http://bit.ly/37f0JER>

Missouri House Bill 2044, introduced on Jan. 8, 2020, proposes the creation of five-member “parental library review boards” to identify “age-inappropriate” public library materials and restrict access to those materials. The bill proposes criminal prosecution for librarians who make those materials available to minors and would deny funding to libraries that do not employ parental library review boards to restrict access to their materials.

The United for Libraries Institute: Friends, Foundations, and Trustees event will be livestreamed Saturday, Jan. 25 during the 2020 ALA Midwinter Meeting. In-person event registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Eastern; livestreaming will be 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Registration to join the livestream is free.

Library Trustees, Friends groups, Foundations, and library staff are invited to join via YouTube for this first-ever free afternoon of learning opportunities. The United for Libraries Institute is a unique chance for board members to participate in national training on advocacy, fundraising, recruiting younger generations, and more.

New York Times bestselling author and podcaster Gretchen Rubin (The Four Tendencies, “Happier with Gretchen Rubin”) will deliver the keynote address. Deborah Doyle, vice chair of Sonoma County (California) Library Commission, president of California Public Library Advocates, and United for Libraries Legislative Committee chair, will moderate. The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announced that registration for the 2020 ALSC National Institute has opened.
