[Michlib-l] Ditchy Dewey??

Hello Fabulous Librarians!

The librarian who is in charge of our juvenile nonfiction collection was considering re-classifying our fairy tales and folk tales. Currently, they are by country of origin, which is technically the "right" way to do it, but it is not patron friendly. After talking with her and tossing a few ideas around, she said, "can we just get rid of Dewey?"

Be still my librarian heart! CAN WE??

So, I am wondering, has anyone out there ditched Dewey for something better?  If so, could you answer a few questions for me?

What system are you using now?

How is it working? Better? Same?

What problems did you encounter?

How did patrons respond?

How do you make your classifications?  For example, is your Art section sub-divided into Artists, Painting, Drawing, etc? Are crafts included or are they a separate category? Or...do I have it completely wrong?

Anything else that I should know, but didn't know to ask?

Also, did anyone change from Dewey, have disastrous results and have to switch back?
