Thank you for sharing this link. It sounds like the Seattle library is handling this very well. I appreciate the information.

I would like to hear some official information on this as it pertains to libraries. I looked at ALA's info. None of it seemed to address what to do with library materials. Depending on the book, you might not be able to wipe down the cover. Then there is fabric in carpet, upholstery, puppets, stuffed animals, etc.

Thank you for the information, Susan. Speaking of panicking, if anyone is feeling anxious, afraid, etc., because of the coronavirus (or any reason), please don't hesitate to speak to someone about it. We're all in this together!
In regard to the patron's privacy, it sounds like we will need to wipe down all items. I have a question about the inside of the items though (books, audio books, etc.). If germs can live on the outside of an item for up to 72 hours, how long can they live on the inside of a book's pages or an enclosed audio book, etc?

My suggestion: don't panic, go to the CDC web site and follow their recommendations. ALA also has put out some good info.

Is freezing an option? How can items be made safe, without destroying them? Should employees wear protective gear to empty and process returned items?

In regard to the items coming back from patrons that have tested positive for the coronavirus, how would a library know because of the patron's right to privacy under the ADA Act?

My board passed the KDL-based Pandemic Policy, but asked a very pertinent question regarding what comes during and after a pandemic to the collections. How do you clean materials returned by those that have contracted the virus--and do we need to be proactive now and use some method of cleaning books or waiting? If we're being told to use our own pens to sign things, does that mean that slick book covers and DVDs might be a source of infection. >From the reports I've read, some are saying the virus can live on these surfaces for up to 48 hours--and you cannot clean these items with bleach or spray cleaners. I've not seen any conversations regarding this phase of a Pandemic for libraries.
